Calvert
Hall’s varsity water polo team improved to 19-2 on the season with
three wins at the George Mason University Invitational, this weekend,
including a thrilling, 17-16, victory over the Naval Academy Aquatics
Club in the championship game of the Under-19 Division. It was Calvert
Hall’s first ever win over the Navy team.
Calvert Hall was
unable to stop the high-powered Navy offense, led by U.S. National
Youth Team member Max Schlagel, but the Cards were able to match the
scoring of the Midshipmen as junior Mike Helou enjoyed his best game of
2006 and scored seven goals. The Cardinals also got hat-tricks from
junior Arny Warren and senior Josh Barnes, as well two goals from
senior John Stedding. In addition, sophomore Archie Warren and senior
Chad Eskridge each netted one goal.
Earlier in the tournament, Calvert Hall also defeated DC Polo, 19-1, and Gonzaga (DC), 19-7.
Calvert
Hall leads the MIAA with a 7-0 league record and has only one regular
season match left, on October 23, at arch-rival Loyola. Prior to that,
the Cardinals may meet Navy again, when they compete in the Annapolis
Classic, this Friday.
