CALVERT HALL AND MCDONOGH RAIN DOWN GOALS IN LOPSIDED VICTORIES AS A CONFERENCE DRAWS TIGHT AGAIN

CALVERT
HALL AND MCDONOGH RAIN DOWN GOALS IN LOPSIDED VICTORIES AS A CONFERENCE
DRAWS TIGHT AGAIN

St. Joe and John Carroll battle to a scoreless tie

Calvert
Hall and McDonogh combined for 13 goals in a pair of lopsided MIAA A
Conference games, yesterday, and the top three teams in the A
Conference are again separated by just two points as we begin the final
eight days of the regular season.

The third-ranked Cardinals
(10-4-2, 9-2-2) stunned visiting Loyola with a five goal outburst as
they swept their regular season series with the Dons with a 5-1 win,
yesterday at Calvert Hall, and pulled within one-point of first-place
Archbishop Curley (10-3-0).

It was the second time in as many
days that Calvert Hall took a commanding first half lead and cruised to
a comfortable homefield win.  Christian Barreiro led the attack with
two goals and two assists, while sophomore Matt Tyrie had a goal and an
assist.  Joe Malstrom scored one goal, and junior defender Austin Abell
got his first varsity goal as well.

While that game was taking
place, second-ranked McDonogh was making life tough for Gilman, which
had absorbed the 5-0 loss to Calvert Hall one day earlier.  The Eagles
(11-2-1, 9-2-1), playing at home, got big efforts from several players
as they routed the Greyhounds, 8-0.

Senior Andrew Bulls led the
assault with two goals and two assists and he got plenty of help.
Senior Nick Kruter also netted two goals, junior Tyler Fiorito had
three assists and sophomore Chris Agorsor and freshman Jeremy Kirkwood
each had one goal and one assist.

With the win, McDonogh remains one-point behind Calvert Hall and two-points back of Curley.

Both
the Cardinals and Eagles will have a chance to pass the Friars, at
least temporarily, when they both return to action tomorrow.  Calvert
Hall will host St. Paul’s, while McDonogh will visit Mount St. Joseph,
which played a scoreless tie yesterday with John Carroll.  Curley does
not return to league action until Saturday morning when it hosts John
Carroll.

McDonogh’s remaining games include a home game with
Loyola on Tuesday, followed with showdowns with Calvert Hall and
Curley, at Calvert Hall next Wednesday and at McDonogh next Friday.  In
addition to St. Paul’s and McDonogh, Calvert Hall will travel to John
Carroll on Tuesday.

After its Saturday game with John Carroll,
Curley will visit St. Joe on Tuesday, before the potentially decisive
game at McDonogh.

With the one-point it earned for yesterday’s
tie, John Carroll (8-5-1, 7-5-1) edged one-point in front of Loyola
(8-10-0, 7-7-0) in the race for fourth-place, while maintaining its
three-point advantage over St. Joe (7-5-4, 5-4-4).

John Carroll
will play at St. Paul’s today, in addition to its games with Curley and
Calvert Hall.  Loyola, which has now lost three of its last four games,
will host Archbishop Spalding tomorrow, and can clinch its post-season
position with a win, before Tuesday’s finale at McDonogh.

St.
Joe, which has a three-point lead on Spalding for the sixth and final
playoff spot, will close its regular season against the Cavaliers, next
Thursday at home, in addition to its matches with McDonogh and Curley.
