Despite
an individual win by Archbishop Spalding’s Rob Wetzel, top-ranked
Loyola bunched enough runners near the top to edge the host Cavaliers,
27-30, in a key MIAA A Conference cross country race, yesterday at
Kinder Park.
As they usually do, Loyola’s Greg Jubb (16:33) and
Ryan Stasiowski (16:46) ran in tandem and finished second and third,
respectively, to lead the Dons, while Matt Kaplan (17:36) and Joe
Orsulak (17:39) ran fifth and sixth, followed by ninth-place Johnny
McAuliffe.
It was enough to stave off the Spalding upset bid,
which was aided by a 4-5 finish by Greg Sullivan (17:15) and Trevor
Keane (17:17) and an eighth-place effort from J.R. Spencer (17:54).
The
victory allowed the Dons to improve to 7-0 in the A Conference and sets
up a showdown with Mount St. Joseph, which is also 7-0, next week
