Mount
St. Joseph junior Ryan Shea won two events and scored 40 team points,
over the weekend at Villanova University in Philadelphia, to earn the
title Most Valuable Swimmer at the 2007 National Catholic Swimming
Championships. Shea’s Gaels finished eighth overall in the prestigious
22-team field. MIAA power Loyola also produced two first-place efforts
and finished second overall.
Shea’s victories came in the 100 and 200 (1:40.52) freestyle races.
Senior
Andrew Quesenberry captured the 50 yard freestyle relay for Loyola, in
a time of 21.62, and the Dons also won the 200 yard medley relay as
Greg Pelton, Sean Roddy, Evan Danz and Quesenberry recorded a time of
1:37.42 in the final. Quesenberry was also on Loyola’s third-place 200
freestyle relay unit.
Roddy and Pelton also finished second and
third, respectively in the 200 yard individual medley and Roddy placed
third in the 100 breaststroke and tied for sixth for overall event
scoring with 33 points. Pelton scored 30 team points, which was tied
for ninth overall. One other top performer for the Dons was freshman
Hugh Davision, who was fourth in the 200 free, fifth in the 500 free
and swam a leg on the 200 free relay.
Other top finishes by MIAA
swimmers included a fourth in the 100 butterfly by St. Joe’s J.T. Cavey
and a fifth in the same event by Calvert Hall’s Arny Warren. Calvert
Hall finished 12th overall with 40 points.
