Loyola
junior Bobby Kirby limited host St. Paul’s to three runs (one earned)
on six hits, with three strikeouts, and went the distance to lead the
visiting Dons to a 5-3 win over the Crusaders, which snapped a
second-place tie between the two teams in the MIAA A Conference
baseball standings.
Kirby struck out six as he improved his
personal record to 4-2 earn his fourth victory of the season, against
two losses. His ERA for the season now
stands at 0.98 (50 innings) and he also helped himself with a an RBI sac fly
in the second inning.
Brian
Taffe also made a strong start for St. Paul’s (13-10, 8-5), going 5.1
innings, but the Dons got to him for four in fifth, turning a 3-1
deficit into a 5-3 lead.
After the Dons (13-6, 9-4) went up 1-0
in the second, St. Paul’s responded with three in the bottom of the
inning. After back-to-back singles to open the inning, an infield
error opened the door further for the Crusaders, who got RBI hits from
Jack Carey (1-for-2 with 2 walks) and Colby Roane (2-for-4).
Loyola
also took advantage of an infield error to start its winning rally in
the sixth. Freshman Tm Peitsch came through with the first big hit, a
pinch-hit single that drove in two runs. Senior shortstop Hunter
McIntyre then put the Dons ahead with a two-run single to comple the
scoring. Senior first-baseman Jeff Fowler also had a big day going
4-for-4 with a double and a run scored.
