GIBBONS OVERWHELMS GILMAN, 73-32

by Joe DiBlasi

Cardinal Gibbons turned in a impressive opening game effort, as it dominated visiting Gilman throughout a lopsided first half to cruise to a 73-32 non-conference basketball victory over the Greyhounds, Wednesday at Mullis Gymnasium.

Gibbons, which came on strong last year in the MIAA A Conference and Baltimore Catholic League, raced out to a 26-9 first quarter lead and then outscored Gilman 24-6 in the second stanza to take a commanding 50-15 lead to the locker room.

Justin Kuntz, a 6-7 sophomore, had a game high 24 points for Gibbons and senior point-guard Jamar Briccoe added 16.

For cooach Jeff Cheevers, who played 14 players, the contest was a good tuneup for his squad’s league opener in both the MIAA and BCL, which will come against Archbishop Spalding, on Sunday at home.

Gilman, which was also playing its season opener, was led by senior guard Jeff Irwin, who scored 10 points.

The Greyhounds will challenge another A Conference power on Friday when they meet McDonogh in a first round game at the Boys’ Latin Lake Invitational.
