KEITH RAWLINGS NAMED JOHN CARROLL’S NEW FOOTBALL COACH

The John Carroll School’s search for a new varsity football coach has ended.

Larry Dukes, John Carroll’s Athletic Director, has announced that Keith Rawlings, long-time Harford County resident and owner of The Arena Club, was offered and has accepted the position.

“We are very happy with our selection. We feel that Keith not only brings a strong football background, but someone who understands the community, the mission of the school, and possesses the values that we want instilled in our young men,” Dukes said.

“Keith has been successful throughout his life, most notably as owner of The Arena Club and past president of the Harford County Board of Realtors,” Dukes said. “And he’s done it through hard work, attention to detail, and through setting high standards for himself and others.”

Rawlings, who played football for Division III Salisbury State College, is a fixture on the sidelines in Harford County. Rawlings also owns The Arena Club health and fitness center.

Rawlings has coached at various levels of football, including the recreation level and as a member of the staff at Edgewood High School.

“I believe my experience both on and off the field will serve me well in motivating young people to achieve their best, not only as athletes, but as productive citizens of their schools and communities,” Rawlings said.

“Those same experiences provide me the perspective for quickly making the right decisions when situations arise concerning player safety, student development, the reputation of the school, and relationships between the athletic department and the parents, boosters, alumni, and community,” Rawlings said.

“I am excited about this opportunity. I love working with young people,” Rawlings said. “I am grateful for the trust and confidence that The John Carroll School is showing in me.”

The coaching search yielded several well-qualified candidates, and it appears that Coach Rawlings’ unique combination of on-field abilities and off-field contacts made a difference.

“Having been involved with coaching and young people most of my adult life, I share Keith’s enthusiasm for athletics and developing the whole student,” said Paul Barker, John Carroll’s principal.

“It was important to John Carroll that we hired someone who could not only make our football team successful on the field,” Barker  said, “but who has a clear sense of and support of the mission of the school.”

Rawlings will start in his new position immediately, assembling a coaching staff, meeting current student-athletes, and preparing for the fall 2008 season.
