Four MIAA baseball teams gathered at Gambrills Park, on Sunday, and A Conference powers Mount St. Joseph and Archbishop Spalding each swept two games, taking turns topping St. Vincent Pallotti and Boys’ Latin of the B Conference.
In it’s first game, St. Joe got into a slugfest with Pallotti, as the Panthers jumped in front with five run first, after the Gaels scored three in the top half of the inning. The Gaels regained the lead with a five run second and went in front 14-5 with a six run fourth. Pallotti, however, got back within four a single run in the home half of the fifth and four in four in the sixth. The Panthers would get no closer
Will Staso was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI for St. Joe, while Craig Howser hit a three-run homer scored three runs. Ryan Kemp also scored three times for the Gaels and went 2-for-3 at the plate.
P.J. Martindale led Pallotti by going 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBI. Kevin Hughes was 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Adam Goodman was 2-for-3 with three RBI on a bases loaded triple.
In the second game, sophomore Zach Spahn limited BL to just three hits, as the Gaels won 9-1. Sophomore Michael Draper hit a double for the games only extra-base hit.
Spalding won a tight battle with Boys’ Latin, 3-1, as Matt Hillsinger drove in the winning runs with a two-run single in the fourth inning. Jared **** went the distance on the mound to get the win for the Cavaliers.
Against Pallotti, Spalding scored 12 times to top the free-swinging Panthers, 12-7.
The weekend was not a complete loss for Pallotti. On Saturday, it got a three-run triple from Mark Brady, in the bottom of the seventh, to steal a come-from-behind, 8-7, MIAA B Conference victory from defending champion St. Mary’s.
