BOYS’ LATIN STRUGGLES PAST PALLOTTI, 14-3

BOYS’ LATIN STRUGGLES PAST PALLOTTI, 14-3

Struggling
for an offensive rhythm throughout and unable to get is defense off the
field for long stretches of the contest, Boys’ Latin came up with just
enough big plays to turn back host St. Vincent Pallotti, 14-3, in a
MIAA B Conference cross-division contest, last night at Johns Hopkins’
Homewood Field.  The game was the first of the 2006 Primetime Pigskin
High School Football Series.

Following an exchange of punts,
Boys’ Latin (2-1) started its second drive of the game near midfield
and capitalized on the opportunity.  The Lakers drove inside the 20
before quarterback Charlie McComas lofted a beautiful ball to junior
tight end Mark Field, who found himself wide open up the left seam, for
a 14-yard touchdown reception.

The Lakers’ only other score came
in the second quarter when senior Grady Gamble slipped a tackle at the
line of scrimmage and broke loose for a 44-yard scoring run.

The
Lakers had trouble slowing Pallotti (1-2) between the 20’s, as speedy
Panther tailback Kyle Moore racked up yardage in chunks.  Near the red
zone, however, Pallotti self-destructed.  One promising drive, which
had reach the BL 14, was pushed back to midfield by penalties and
several other miscues halted scoring opportunities.

Some of that
was due to clutch play by the Boys’ Latin defense, led by senior Nate
Saunders, who had three first half sacks.  Boys’ Latin also blocked two
field goal attempts, one each by junior Chris Katerianakis and senior
Alex Otto.

Pallotti’s lone points did come via the field goal,
as sophomore Mike Florenzo connected from 20 yards, late in the second
quarter.
