FRIENDS’ GOLDMAN OFF TO VERMONT

Tommy Goldman, an oustanding senior midfielder at The Friends School, has has signed a national letter of intent to play lacrosse for the University of Vermont Catamounts, the school’s athletic department announced on Friday.

A three–sport athlete for the Quakers, Goldman also plays varsity basketball and was an important player on the Quakers’ MIAA B-Conference varsity soccer championship run earlier this fall.

The Quakers were B-Conference runners-up in soccer. Goldman was a captain on the lacrosse team.

“Tommy inspires his teammates to play and work harder,” said Quakers’ lacrosse coach Rick Matthews. “He’s a tenacious competitor.”

Looking forward to the coming year, Matthews is confident that Goldman will be a major contributor to the offense for Friends, which plays in the highly competitive MIAA A Conference.

“We had a young, inexperienced team last season. This year’s Quakers will be a team with the experience and leadership of a strong senior class, led by Tommy Goldman, accompanied by a talented, supporting core of underclassman,” Matthews said.  “Our goal is to be competitive and add some balance to our conference.”

Goldman also has achieved an outstanding reputation as a student.

Goldman serves as co-president of the student government, head of the Friends School Book Club, and head of the Hip-Hop Appreciation Club.

Goldman is also an avid guitar player who has played in a local band.

The Catamount lacrosse team finished 4-10 overall last season and 1-4 in the America East Conference. Vermont completed its season with a 20-12 victory over Hartford.

MORGAN-GREEN SINKS SPALDING WITH 43 POINTS

Defending MIAA B Conference basketball champion St. Mary’s, paced by 43 points from star guard Josh Morgan-Green, powered past A Conference foe Archbishop Spalding, 81-62, in front of packed house last night at Spalding.

Morgan-Green had five three-pointers in the first half, including four in the opening quarter as the Saints built a 30-10 lead and never looked back. The Cavaliers started the game very sluggish and somewhat intimidated by the more experienced St. Mary’s squad.

“[Josh] is a legitimate Division I prospect,” said St. Mary’s coach Brian Konik.  “”We got good efforts from Trey Quinn (11 assists) and    Nick Groce, (eight points, five assists).  We played very well together and we’ve been using a five point guard offense.”

The win combined with Mount Carmel’s victory over John Carroll on Tuesday, gives the B Conference a 2-0 start against the A Conference this year and the Saints will look to continue to the streak when they meet John Carroll on Saturday (3:00 pm) in the opening contest of the Charm City Classic at Loyola College.  The Saints (2-0) eliminated the Patriots from last year’s B Conference playoffs, in the semifinal round, before going on to top Mount Carmel in the title game.

The Cavaliers (0-1) were led by 6-4 sophomore forward Delmore Howard who had a team high 16 points and junior guard Andre Moore who chipped in 12 points.

Athletic sophomore big man William Udoh provided a spark off the bench with 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting. Udoh and Howard helped key a Spalding second half surge with their offensive rebounding and aggressiveness in the paint. The Cavaliers used a full court press to force many Saints turnovers, but could not capitalize, cutting the lead to ten points before the Saints pulled away for the win.

Spalding played St. Mary’s even the last three quarters of the game, actually outscoring the Saints by one point from quarters two through four. But the Saints red hot start, featuring four threes by Morgan-Green in the first quarter alone, absolutely killed any chances Spalding had of winning the game.

The Saints offense featured numerous ball screens, back screens, and back door cuts. By the time Spalding figured out how to play team defense to stop the offensive attack, it was far too late.

The Cavaliers will look for their first win of the season on Sunday when they face an even tougher challenge at Cardinal Gibbons High School. Tip off is set for 3:15 pm.

A “CLASSIC” RETURN

by Derek Toney

The Charm City Classic is back. After an nine-year absence, one of the top boys’ basketball high school events of the 1990s, has been reborn for the 21st century. Eight teams, including five MIAA programs, will converge at Loyola College’s Reitz Arena Saturday afternoon.

Defending MIAA A Conference and Baltimore Catholic League champ Towson Catholic will tip off its season against perennial national power Rice (N.Y.) in the nightcap at 8 p.m. Rice (ranked 11th by USA Today), which was runner-up for the New York Class AA state championship last season, has four starters back including Connecticut-bound guard Kemba Walker. After graduating standouts Donte Green (Syracuse) and Malcolm Delaney (Virginia Tech), Towson Catholic will be turning to senior guard Larry Bastfield, who has signed with Toledo.

The opening game will have a matchup of old B Conference foes with John Carroll taking on St. Mary’s. The Patriots, ranked No. 21 in ESPN’s Elite 25 national poll, has moved to the A Conference with one of the nation’s top juniors in 6 foot, seven inch forward Isaiah Philmore. John Carroll was originally slated to play New Jersey powerhouse St. Benedict’s, but coach Tony Martin said St. Mary’s is just as dangerous.

“We’re excited about the opportunity,” said John Carroll coach Tony Martin. “St. Mary’s is a team that’s going to test us because they run the Princeton offense. They can hit threes and present a lot of matchup issues.”

The Saints won the B Conference crown last season, and return arguably one of the area’s best unknown guards in senior Josh Morgan-Green. The 5-11 Green, who passed the 1,000-point career mark earlier this week, averaged 20.8 points a game as a junior last season.

John Bauersfeld makes his coaching debut with Calvert Hall College which plays perennial Washington Catholic Athletic Conference stronghold Gonzaga (D.C.) in the second contest. The Cardinals boast two of the area’s promising sophomores in 6-7 Jon Graham (son of former Maryland star Ernie) and 5-8 guard Kyle Wise. Harvard commit Max Kenyi leads Gonzaga, which went undefeated during the summer and won two of the toughest leagues in the Washington area, the Rock and Kenner.

St. Frances will open its campaign against St. John’s Neumann-Maria Goretti from Philadelphia. Neumann-Goretti reached the finals of the Alhambra Catholic Invitational Tournament last season and return 6-4 wing
Jamal Wilson, who is headed to Rhode Island. Maryland signee Sean Mosley will lead the Panthers.

“In my opinion, he’s the best Maryland recruit out of Baltimore since Keith Booth,” said tournament founder Bill Spotts, who witnessed hundreds of college prospects during the Charm City’s first run including current NBA stars Tracy McGrady (Houston Rockets), Stephon Marbury (New York Knicks) and Rasheed Wallace (Detroit Pistons). “He’s a terrific player who could be playing right now for Maryland.”

A percentage of the proceeds will go to G.B. Charities, a non-profit organization that provides tuition assistance to low-income families at accredited faith-based schools. Tickets for Saturday’s showcase are $12 for adults, $8 for students with identification at Reitz Arena or can be purchased online at TicketMaster.com. For additional information go to HoopGroup.com.

Charm City Classic

MOUNT CARMEL BOYS’ HOOPS OFF TO A HAPPY START

by Derek Toney

Troy Franklin gave Towson University a reason to smile and left John Carroll High frowning Wednesday night. In the first “upset” of the boys’ basketball season, Mount Carmel posted a 72-61 victory over John Carroll in a MIAA non-conference contest in Bel Air.

Playing in front of his future college coach, Towson’s Pat Kennedy and assistant Jim Meil, Franklin had 23 points, five assists and eight steals in the Cougars’ season debut. Senior backcourt mate Dwayne Wheeler contributed 19 points and six assists.

“We came out ready to play,” said Franklin, a 6 foot senior point guard. “We jumped out on them in the first half and had a good lead.”

The Cougars, who’ve been in the last two B Conference title games, led by as many as 18 points in the second half against the Patriots (1-1). Though Mount Carmel split with John Carroll last season in B play, the Patriots are now in the A Conference, giving the Cougars a little added motivation.

“We got a little history with them, they’re very competitive and a very good program,” said Mount Carmel coach Tom Rose. “If you asked them, they’re probably not going to look at it as an upset, but for our program, this is a very big win for us.”

“The coaches said just play hard, play to win and don’t worry about the rankings,” said Wheeler. “Just block the crowd out and play hard, and that’s what we did.”

The Cougars’ quickness along with solid inside play from Rummell King (11 rebounds) and Marc Anthony Franks kept John Carroll and its home audience muted most of the evening, building a 31-22 halftime advantage. Franklin started a 9-0 run that increased Mount Carmel’s advantage to 44-26 late in the third quarter, with an assist on a layup by Franks (10 rebounds and six blocked shots). Franklin had five points during the surge.

The Patriots, ranked No. 21 in ESPN’s Elite Top 25 national poll, pulled to within seven in the fourth quarter after a three-poiner by Erick Smith. Wheeler, who injured his shoulder in practice Tuesday, had a layup and two free throws from Wheeler, and a Franklin four-point play helped push the Cougars’ advantage back to double digits. John Carroll got within five with over a minute remaining in regulation, but it didn’t rattle Mount Carmel and its five senior starters.

“I knew they had another run in them, we just had to stay together,” said Rose. “I told them to focus on what we need to accomplish, let’s pick them up full court, take away any three point opportunities, and let’s finished the game. We got to get better, we’re not perfect yet.”

“Troy and Dwayne are as quick as any guards we’re going to face in the A, but at the end of the day, we knew we had more depth,” said John Carroll coach Tony Martin, whose team opened Monday with a 115-50 victory over Glenelg Country School. “The issue was we didn’t play with any semblance of structure and the game turned into a track meet. We’re still a young group, they start five seniors, we start four juniors and it’s going to take us some time.”

Junior forward Isaiah Philmore had 20 points to lead the Patriots, and Smith finished with 17. John Carroll will play its first A Conference match against Martin’s former team Archbishop Spalding Monday. Saturday, the Patriots meet defending B Conference champ St. Mary’s in the opening game of the Charm City Classic at Loyola College’s Reitz Arena.

St. Mary’s ended Mount Carmel’s title reign in the finals last season. If Wednesday is any indication, the Cougars will be tough for any opponent this season.

“We’ve really come a long way,”  said Franklin, whose team next MIAA contest will . “We just came out and play hard. We played together as a team.”

WRESTLING PREVIEW: GILMAN GRAPPLERS HAVE NAME, BUT WILL THEY HAVE GAME?

 by Lem Satterfield

What’s in a name?

Plenty.

Just ask the members of Gilman’s wrestling team.

Art Modell is in the lineup, so are kids named Faust and, Mighty.

But none of the three is whom you might initially believe.

Arthur Modell is a sophomore, 171-pounder who is the grandson of the former owner of The Ravens of Baltimore.

Tommy Faust is another sophomore wrestler, down at 125, who is the first-cousin of Gilman graduate Mike Faust, a former National Preps champ and NCAA All-American.

And senior Matthew Mighty is a newcomer at 189 pounds who must rise to the challenge of a difficult schedule.

“We also have a lot of freshmen who are made up of some athletic kids,” said sixth-year coach Henry Franklin, “but they don’t necessarily have a wrestling pedigree. The kids will work hard, but they’re still earning their stripes.”

Among the Greyhounds, Faust is perhaps the most experienced, having finished fifth at the MIAAs, and, seventh at the private schools state tournament. Giancarlo Simmons (130) was eighth at states.

Head Coach: Henry Franklin, 13th year (sixth at Gilman)

Last year’s record:  10-12

WRESTLING PREVIEW: LOYOLA’S COLIN SHUSTER’S IN HUNT FOR STATE CROWN

 by Lem Satterfield

Loyola’s 140-pound junior Colin Schuster comes from a long line of wrestling relatives.

And because of that, he’s often compared to his predecessors.

One of them is his cousin, Matt Schuster, who twice earned state titles at Franklin High in Baltimore County before graduating in 2002.

Asked recently if he was anything like Matt, Colin responded, “not really, no.”

“Matt actually lives in Alaska right now, with the Eskimos. He was hunting a bear with a bow-and-arrow two weeks ago,” said Colin Schuster. “But I’m not much into hunting grizzly bears. I’m just pretty much, you know, what you see is what you get.”

What Colin Schuster is, on the wrestling mat, however, is very similar to Matt Schuster, and that is a well-rounded, technician capable of winning any bout in a variety of ways.

As a sophomore, last season, Schuster won 46 of 52 bouts, earning an MIAA tournament title along the way.

Schuster fell short of his goal of adding the private schools state title to his list of achievements, but that’s something he plans to hunt down this season.

“At states, last year, I didn’t come ready. I lost a couple of matches that I deserved to lose, and things fell apart from there,” said Schuster.

“But I’ve had a long time to think bout it,” Schuster added. “My summer consisted of a really good camp at Clarion University, coming [to Loyola] on Mondays and Wednesdays every week, and lifting weights. All of us, as a team, banded together and worked hard. Hopefully, we’ll just be in better shape than everyone else.”

Schuster will begin the year trying to win the Parkville and Perry Hall Tournaments, each, for the third straight seasons.

After that, however, Schuster has his sights set on hunting down even more titles.

“It’s going to be very important for me to come out and be strong early,” Schuster said. “But the tournaments and the preseason don’t count as much as the last three weeks, with the MIAAs, private schools and National Preps.”

Top returning wrestlers: Brian Frantz, Sr., 27-17 record; Danny Smith, Sr., 29-26; Cameron Miller, Jr.,  31-25; Gus Moreno, Soph., 23-19; Brian Frantz, Soph., 28-13.

WRESTLING PREVIEW: GAELS GRAPPLERS YOUNG, BUT GOOD

 Mount St. Joseph Gaels

Coach: Kirk Salvo, third year (21-5, career record)

Last year’s record: 10-3

103 Alex Rice, Fr./ Kevin Johnson, Fr.
112 Frank Goodwin, Soph. *
119 Graceson Pastirik, Jr. /Matt Hiltz, Soph.
125 Gino Pollack, Soph.
130 Benny Schaufele, Soph. *
135 Danny Orem, Jr */ Kevin Bohlman, Sr.
140 Colin Bohlman, Soph./ Shane Cannaday, Jr.
145 Bill Selba, Sr./ Patrick Downey, Fr.
152 Bobby Bowman, Soph.
160 Edwin Jackson, Sr. *
171 Matt Mullett, Soph./ Josh Wadkins, Soph.
189 Pete Jones, Soph.
215 Mike Rovnan, Soph.
285 Karl Green, Soph. *

* Returning state place winners

Outlook: “As you can see we could be starting 10 sophomores,” said Salvo.  “There’s a load of talent, and an encouraging willingness to work hard, but few proven high school-level champions with no returning MIAA champs.”

But Goodwin is a stud. A second-team All-Metro selection, Goodwin went 47-9 with 26 pins and was runner-up at both the MIAA and private schools state tournaments and placed third at National Preps.

Goodwin “placed at every tournament last season,” said Salvo, referring to Goodwin’s finishes, for example, at the Beast of The East (seventh), The Powerade (fourth), the Mount Mat Madness (second), and to title-winning efforts at the Germantown, War On The Shore and Colonial Forge Ultimate Challenge, the latter of which earned him Outstanding Wrestler honors.

Schaufele finished with 40 wins, Orem with 37, K. Bohlman with 26, and Green, with 20.

Schaufele was a runner-up at MIAAs, and placed third at private school states. Orem was third at both of those tournmaents, and Schaufele, an MIAA runner-up, a third place finisher at states, and a fifth place winner at National Preps.

Jackson was fourth, and, fifth, respectively at MIAAs and states, and Green, sixth and fifth.

“We have increased the number and quality of competitions, and will be participating in local, regional and national level events. We will be looking toward consistent improvement over the course of the season,” Salvo said.

“The team will be led by junior-captain Danny Orem. If we can avoid injury and mature physically and mentally, we hope to challenge for the MIAA dual meet and tournament championships,” Salvo said. “Our first big test will come next Tuesday against a tough Severna Park squad, followed by a weekend at the War on the Shore, where we’ll see Curley, John Carroll, North Carroll, Stephen Decatur and several respectable Virginia and Delaware teams.”

GIBBONS OVERWHELMS GILMAN, 73-32

by Joe DiBlasi

Cardinal Gibbons turned in a impressive opening game effort, as it dominated visiting Gilman throughout a lopsided first half to cruise to a 73-32 non-conference basketball victory over the Greyhounds, Wednesday at Mullis Gymnasium.

Gibbons, which came on strong last year in the MIAA A Conference and Baltimore Catholic League, raced out to a 26-9 first quarter lead and then outscored Gilman 24-6 in the second stanza to take a commanding 50-15 lead to the locker room.

Justin Kuntz, a 6-7 sophomore, had a game high 24 points for Gibbons and senior point-guard Jamar Briccoe added 16.

For cooach Jeff Cheevers, who played 14 players, the contest was a good tuneup for his squad’s league opener in both the MIAA and BCL, which will come against Archbishop Spalding, on Sunday at home.

Gilman, which was also playing its season opener, was led by senior guard Jeff Irwin, who scored 10 points.

The Greyhounds will challenge another A Conference power on Friday when they meet McDonogh in a first round game at the Boys’ Latin Lake Invitational.

Cardinal Gibbons 73, Gilman 32
Gibbons     26    24    15    8       73
