AFTER SLOW START, ST. PAUL’S ROLLS PAST PARK

Following a first quarter which ended in a a 6-6 tie, visiting St. Paul’s generated separation from Park, with an up-tempo effort which featured effective pressure defense.  The result was an 12 point halftime advantage, as the Crusaders coasted to a 49-28 non-conference basketball victory, yesterday in Brooklandville.

Now 2-0, St. Paul’s was led by Sidney McCray, who scored 13 points, including seven in the second quarter.

Under head coach Seth Goldberg, St. Paul’s is  young, but talented.  Freshman Miles Code flashed his potential with 12 points, in yesterday’s win, and sophomore Virgil Davis hit for eight, including two-three pointers late in the game.

The Bruins are led by Coach Josh Wolf, who returns after a year away from the game.  He spent last season helping at home, as twin sons Jacob and Daniel were born.  In 11 previous seasons with the Bruins, Wolf led the team to two MIAA C Conference championships (2002-03 and 2005-06) and took the team to the finals on two other occasions.

Yeserday, Karl Nelson and Anthony Kinslow each had eight points for the Bruins (1-1).

St.Paul’s 49, Park 28
St. Paul’s: McCray 13, Code 12, Willis 3, Johnston 2, S.Davis 2, V.Davis 8, Kuchno 1, Murphy 2, Sydnor 6. Totals: 20 6-12 49.

Outlook: The Saints “are excited about this year’s team,” said coach Wayne Hicks, who returns Fred Green, an MIAA runner-up who was named to receive Outstanding Wrestler honors at the private schools state tournament.

“We’ll have some holes early on, until we get people in the right spots,” said Hicks, whose Saints rise into the A Conference. “Several lettermen from the squad that finished 15-6 in dual meets and 7th at the state prep championships.”

St. Mary’s has won two B Division titles and an MIAA B Conference title in the last 3 years. The coaching staff is bolstered by former All-Metro Wrestler of The Year, Ryan Davis, a former McDonogh and Blair Academy wrestler who won
three National Prep titles.

“Ryan is fast establishing himself a one of the state’s premiere wrestling technicians,” Hicks said. “That should help St. Mary’s to meet the challenges.”

A key to this season will be the ability to fill some holes in the weight classes.

Key losses to graduation: Matt Hicks (119; 103 career wins, 3rd States); Chris Ruland (125; 108 career wins, 6th states); and Robert Garland (189; 215, 2nd MIAA, 83 career wins, 34 falls in 2007).

Outlook: With the graduation of State champions Mitch Fenton and Mike
Kulik, the Friars are working to make new names apparent within the MIAA and
State ranks.  Along with these graduates
and present college wrestlers, runner up Sam Burdych and champion, Josh Boler
are also out of the picture.

From a team that finished second at private school states behind McDonogh, the favorite to repeat, the good news for the Friars is that six state placewinners still remain.

That includes state champion, Tyler Scarinzi, and runner up, Tony Powell.  Look for Joe
Foster and Bubba Corbett to make waves this year at 135 and 160.  Clearly the hardest worker, Ali Saadulaev,
who placed 8th at Cadet Freestyle Nationals this summer, will hunt
down a state championship as well.

Senior
and state place winners Ross Quillet and Tim Wood will add leadership, while
fresh faces, Mike and Nick Micklos are hungry to jump on the scene.  Nick briefly stepped into action last year
with a (3-2) debut at the Mount Mat Madness tournament.

New to the lineup, freshman Brett Przywara will fill the 103 spot with experience and a great work ethic. Sturdy 112lbers, Joe Nelson and Matt Ches will work
hard to make the line-up.

WRESTLING PREVIEW: MIAA B CHAMP JOHN CARROLL STEPS UP INTENSITY

Season outlook:  The Patriots, last year’s MIAA B Conference champion, step up to the A Conference this year. They have 43 wrestlers out for the team.

“We have a very tough schedule,” said Watson. “One of the toughest in the state.”

The Patriots face seven of Maryland’s preseason top 10 teams in dual meets, as well as last year’s state champs, Rising Sun, and the 2006 state champs,  Harford Tech.

The Patriots lost only three starters and return 11. Miller was third at MIAAs, seventh at private school states and earned offseason All-American honors in the Freshman Nationals, and Reese is a returning third place finisher at MIAAs who was seventh at private school states.

Hart won his share of bouts at National Preps, where he participated along with Miller and Reese. Denu, a female world silver medalist in Judo Fighting, cracked the lineup by winning her wrestle-off and will go at 112 pounds.

“In addition,” said Watson, “we’ll be in two tournaments in Pennsylvania one of Maryland’s toughest, the War on the Shore at Stephen Decatur High in Ocean City. Several of our wrestlers prepared by competing in several national level events, like the Freshman Nationals in VA Beach, the Cadet/Jr Nationals in Fargo, ND and the National Duals in Salisbury.”

The Patriots also will wrestle dual meets against Baltimore County tournament champ and county dual tri-champ Hereford, as well as Baltimore County dual tri-champion Milorfd Mill.

Watson said that 33 of his John Carroll wrestlers attended “as many as 80 wrestling camps” during this past summer.

“We have guys who played football who went to wrestling clinics during the offseason,” said Watson, referring to the Volker twins.

JOE EHRMANN NAMED AMONG 100 MOST INFLUENTIAL SPORT EDUCATORS IN USA

REPRINTED FROM  JOE EHRMANN’S ‘BUILDING MEN FOR OTHERS’  PUBLICATION

rainJoe Ehrmann, former
Baltimore Colt player and co-founder of Building Men and Women for Others
(BMWO), has been named one of “The 100 Most Influential Sports Educators
in America” by the Institute for International Sport (IIS).

Distinguishing
both individuals and organizations, the IIS honors those who have “creatively and effectively used
sport in the very best way-as a means to educate and shape positive
values,”
according to Dan Doyle, Executive Director.
“In America and in many other countries, we honor elite athletes, winning
coaches, wealthy team owners and media moguls. We praise sports educators yet
we really do not honor them in a manner befitting their admirable impact on
society.”

Ehrmann, an assistant football coach at The Gilman School in Baltimore, is among an impressive list of honorees, including Andre
Aggassi, Bob Costas, Tiger Woods, and Mike Krzyewski among others.

For the complete list of honorees, please visit: http://www.internationalsport.com/top100Press.cfm

Ehrmann’s Building Men For Others’ foundation and philsophy is to redefine sports and
reframe coaching to help create and coordinate a multi-systemic prevention and
intervention model for healthy youth development within a community, city,
region or state. Through a strategic and intentional focus, the organization seeks to guide parents, coaches, athletic departments, school
systems, agencies, non-profits and civic groups to create a “tipping
point”  A tipping point will occur in America when a critical mass of
individuals and institutions support and implement the idea that physical,
academic, social, emotional, moral and civic competency are no longer beyond
the scope of what sports and coaches can or should accomplish.

SKY IS LIMIT FOR MCDONOGH ON THE MAT

by Lem Satterfield

There are only four words to describe the McDonogh wrestling team’s weaknesses this year: It doesn’t have any.

“This year’s team has great experience with 14 returning end-of-last-season starters,” said Eagles’ coach Pete Welch, who is entering his 14th season.

“We will challenge this group with a schedule of nationally-ranked competition along with traditionally intense rivals of the MIAA,” added Welch, whose assistants include Joe Bakwell, Rob Smoot and Zach Johns.

The Eagles, despite having only six seniors on their roster, are primed for a run at their third straight MIAA A Conference dual meet title, as well as their third straight MIAA and private school state tournament crowns.

McDonogh has gone 8-0 against the league during each of its past two seasons. The returning private school state champions went 17-3 and were ranked No. 1 in the state at the end of last season.

In addition, the Eagles have added some quality lowerweights in the 103, and, 112 pound classes, including former five-time Anne Arundel County champion Mitch Bode, as well as Max Sataloff, each of whom is a freshman.

Back for McDonogh are all five individual MIAA tournament titlists, as are each of its four private schools state champs. In addition, the Eagles return four MIAA runners-up.

National Preps champ Nick Schenk, a sophomore, leads the way, rising to 119 pounds up from 103, where he won tournament crowns at the MIAA, private schools and National Preps events.

Schenk posted a 43-0 record last season, the best-ever by a McDonogh freshman wrestler.

Senior Josh Fitch, who will compete at 140 to start, but who is certified to go at 135, will go after his fourth straight MIAA and private schools state tournament titles.

And then, Fitch, who, like Schenk and junior Shane Milam, is a returning All-Metro First-Teamer, will attempt to win his first National Preps crown at Lehigh University, the school Fitch will attend starting next fall.

Fitch has placed fourth, third and second in past National Preps events, so he wants to go out with a bang.

Milam, a two-time MIAA champ, is back after competing at 145 last season. Milam was an impressive 44-6 with 15 pins last season, winning his first private schools title and placing fourth at National Preps.

Milam will rise to 152 pounds, leaving 145 to another very capable junior in Curtis Holmes, the youngest and perhaps most talented of three siblings who have competed for the Eagles.

Holmes, a football and lacrosse player as well, moves up from 140 pounds, where he won his second straight MIAA championship.

Holmes’ older brother, Bryn, was a National Preps champ in 2005, and went on to play lacrosse at the University of Maryland.

Still another junior is Alex Pagnotta, who won an MIAA title last season before finishing second at private school states. Pagnotta, who competed at 160, and, 171, a year ago, wil rise to 189 this season.

Albert Woody, a junior, and seniors Kramer Whitelaw, Doug Schenk and Lane Clelland were all MIAA runners-up last season in a tournament during which the Eagles outscored runner-up Archbishop Curley, 256.5-221.0.

Woody, a 112-pounder last season, is expected to compete at between 130-to-135.

Whitelaw, who competed at 152 a year ago, will move up to 160. Doug Schenk and Lane Clelland will return to their respective 215 and 275-pound classes.

Navy-bound senior Ben Levin, an offseason marathoner with energy to burn, will go at between 125-to-130, the latter being the weight class at which he was a private schools state runner-up last season.

Eric Filipowicz (125-130), a junior who placed third at last year’s prestigious Mount Mat Madness Invitational, is back after a season that was shortened by injury.

Other retunees include sophomore Scott Patrick, junior Nick Gimenez and senior Joe Eder.

Patrick could see action at anywhere from 125 to 135, Gimenez looks to compete as a 189 pounder, and Eder makes the big jump from 135 to perhaps 160 or even 171.

“We’ll compete in tournaments in New Jersey, Delaware, Virginia, and we’ll host the Ray Oliver Invitational Tournament as well as our first McDonogh Holiday Duals,” Welch said of events that will include top-notch teams.

“This year, we’ll compete in a quad with Blair Academy, St. Edwards of Ohio, and Bergan Catholic,” Welch said. “We look forward to a season of exciting matches with great improvement and with the hopes of staying injury free.”

McDonogh’s wrestling schedule is up on the website at www.mcdonoghwrestling.com. The most challenging schedule McDonogh has ever wrestled. Amateur Wrestling News has ranked McDonogh #29 in the Preseason Prep 40 Poll, but other polls have the Eagles ranked as high as No. 19.

• After finishing second to St. Benedict’s last year, McDonogh will be aiming to get back on top against an always competitive St. Benedict’s and nationally ranked Wyoming Seminary (#16 Prep 40).

• The 35th Ray Oliver Tournament hosted by McDonogh will be more competitive this year with some of Maryland’s top teams: Glenelg, Old Mill, North Carroll, Winters Mill plus the addition of St. Mark’s (#38 Prep 40) out of Delaware and  Langley (#4 in Virginia). (www.mcdonoghwrestling.com/rayolivertourn.html)

• At the Beast, McDonogh hopes to improve on last year’s 13th place finish in one of the nation’s toughest high school tournaments. (www.beastwrestling.com)

• Over the holiday break, McDonogh will be hosting its first dual tournament in a 1 day, 12 team format. Participating teams include Jackson (NJ) (#30 Prep 40), Kellam (VA) (#6 in Virginia), Pennsbury (PA) and others. (www.mcdonoghwrestling.com/mcdholidayduals.html)

• McDonogh will be participating in the Battlefield Duals at Hayfield High School in Virginia with teams like Christiansburg (#13 Prep 40), Colonial Forge (#26 Prep 40), and Upper Perkiomen.

• Duals against Smyrna (DE), MSJ, Curley, BL, and Gilman, plus the 3 new MIAA A conference teams, John Carroll, Spaulding, and St. Mary’s.

• McDonogh will be defending its team title at the toughest tournament in Maryland, Mount Mat Madness. (www.mountmatmadness.com)

• In late January, McDonogh will be wrestling in a quad versus Blair Academy (NJ) (#1 Prep 40), St. Edward (OH) (#6 Prep 40) and Bergen Catholic (NJ).

• Then the usual yearend tournaments in February: MIAA, MIS, and National Preps.

PALLOTTI’S FLANNERY SELECTED TO SHOWCASE POWER

by Gary Adornato

St. Vincent Pallotti senior baseball player Kieran Flannery, a power hitting catcher and right-handed pitcher for the Panthers, has been selected to participate in the 2008 International High School Power Showcase Home Run Derby Contest, in January, at Tropicana Field (home of major league baseball’s Tampa Bay Devil Rays) in Tampa, Florida.

The event, in its second year, is designed to provide a showcase for 60 power hitting prospects, as selected by Power Showcase Inc., the organizer of this home run derby.  The competition will feature one player from each state in the nation, as well as 10 international players, with Flannery, an All-MIAA and All-Metro selection last spring, representing Maryland.

The competition will take place on Jan. 5 and each of the participants will be honored, the night before, at a Welcome Dinner and Uniform Presentation Ceremony.  The Welcome Dinner will take place at the Batter’s Eye Restaurant, inside of Tropicana Field and overlooking the playing field.  At this dinner, each participant will receive his jersey, with his name on the back and the initials of his state in place of a number.

During the competition, each participant will receive a total of 30 outs. The outs will be broken into two rounds of 15.  Metal bats will be used for the first 15 outs and wood bats will be used for the second 15 outs.  After all 60 participants have hit, the top five will advance to the Championship Round. In the Championship Round, each participant will receive 15 outs. The participant can use the bat of their choice, either metal or wood.

In 2007, as a junior, Flannery batted .468 with eight home runs and 45 RBI.  He also posted a .592 on-base percentage and a .989 slugging percentage.  Last summer, he played with Gambills Athletic Club and was the batting champion at the 2007 NABF World Series in Greensboro, NC.

Recently, Flannery committed to attend Indian River Community College in Fort Pierce, FL.
