REED’S HAT TRICK SENDS CRABS TO VAIL FINAL

VAIL, Colorado â?? In an intense rematch of a 2006 semifinal contest, the Baltimore Crabs U-19 lacrosse team edged the Ohio All-Stars, 7-6, in the Vail Lacrosse Shootout, yesterday, as Travis Reed of Boys’ Latin led the way with a hat-trick.  The victory advanced the Crabs into today’s championship game where they will meet Team Arizona, a squad the Crabs defeated, 9-7, on the opening day of the tournament.

Reed, who will play at Maryland next spring, broke a 5-5 tie with his final goal of day and the Baltimore team scored once more before holding on for the 7-6 victory.

Against Ohio, the Crabs fell behind, 2-1, early, but rallied to hold a 4-2 halftime lead.  Ohio also battled back and tied the game at five, early in the third period, before Reed put Baltimore ahead for good.

Seven’s Nick Elsmo and Tim Sutton of BL dominated the face-offs.  Elsmo also added a goal and an assist, as did Brett Weiss of Boy’s Latin.  D.J. Hessler of St. Paul’s, who has been an offensive force in the tournament, added an assist.

Goalies Jake Hagelin (Boys’ Latin) and Matt Chriss (Gilman) were outstanding in the nets, combining for 15 saves and cleared the ball successfully.  The Crabs defense held the high-scoring Ohioans to their lowest goal
output of the tournament, as Ty Boykin (St. Paul’s), John Windsor (St. Paul’s), Kevin Moriarity (Boys’ Latin) and Andrew Walls (Glenelg
Country) clamped down on the Ohio attackers.

Team Arizona, which has not lost since its first day setback against
the Crabs, is comprised mostly of players from national powerhouse
Western Reserve Academy (OH).  Today’s final is set to face-off at 1:00
pm (RMT).

PORTLAND, Maine â?? McDonogh’s Chris Agorsor, one of several MIAA players on the U17 Baltimore Casa Mia Bays soccer team, scored both of his team’s goals, as the Bays defeated Juventus (MA), 2-1, yesterday, in the opening round of the U.S. Soccer Region I (East) Championships, at Bowdin College.

GILMAN’S MILLER FINISHES SECOND IN MARYLAND JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS

GILMAN’S MILLER FINISHES SECOND IN MARYLAND JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS

Fader, Mlynarski, Albright and Mighty also finish strong

In search of his third consecutive Maryland State Junior Golf Championship, Gilman’s Brad Miller, a rising senior, came up two shots short of a three-peat this week, but his two round score of 139 (five under par) was good enough to place him second in the 83rd annual edition of the state’s top junior competition which was contested on Tuesday and Wednesday at Hampshire Greens Golf Course in Silver Spring.

Miller, an All-Metro pick this spring, was Gilman’s #1 player in 2007 and he also placed second at the 2007 MIAA Individual Stroke Play Championships.

Miller’s opening round of 69 left him two shots behind first day leader Charlie Winegardner of Calverton School.  Winegardner, however, slipped to a 73 on day two.  Unfortunately for Miller, who plays out of Baltimore Country Club, Josh Eure, a rising junior from South River who won the MPSSAA state title in the spring, followed a 70 in the opening round with a 67 on the final day, to claim the title.

Other MIAA golfers who fared well in the event were Michael Fader of
McDonogh and John Mlynarski of Saints Peter & Paul, who were both
part of a group of five golfers which tied for seventh place with a two
day total of 147.  In addition, Steven Albright of St. Paul’s and Matt
Mighty of Gilman each finished at 149 and were part of a three-way tie
for 13th place.

JOHNSON RETURNS FROM INJURY

JOHNSON RETURNS FROM INJURY

Former St. Paul’s pitcher Steven Johnson has returned to the roster of the Great Lakes Loons (MI), the Single A affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers, after spending nearly a month on the disabled list with tendinitis in his forearm.

Johnson, who has made five starts this year for the Loons, including the team’s first game ever in its new ballpark – the Dow Diamond – has made two appearances since returning, one in relief and one as a starter, and has allowed just one earned run in 4.1 innings.  For the season, Johnson is 1-3 with a 4.95 ERA with 16 strikeouts and eight walks in 20 innings.

In his third season of professional baseball, Johnson was selected by the Dodgers in the 13th round of the 2005 amateur draft, after his senior season at St. Paul’s.  He struggled in the Golf Coast League later that summer, but returned in 2006 to go 5-5 with 3.89 ERA with Ogden Raptors of the Pioneer League, leading the league in strikeouts (86) and finishing fifth in innings pitched (78.2).  That performance earned him a late-season call-up to Double-A Jacksonville where he made two scoreless appearances.

With Great Lakes, Johnson plays for former major league catcher Lance Parrish, who is the team’s manager.
