CALVERT HALL DOES IT AGAIN

CALVERT HALL DOES IT AGAIN

Cardinals defeate Loyola in water polo final for their sixth consecutive title

Calvert
Hall’s MIAA water polo dynasty continues, as the Cardinals downed
Loyola in Saturday’s MIAA Championship Game, at Calvert Hall, to win
the league title for a sixth consecutive year.

The Cardinals,
fresh off another undefeated regular season in league play, opened
Saturday’s championships with a 14-7 semifinal win over McDonogh,
before scoring 14 more in the championship game against the Dons and
claiming a 14-9 win.

Senior Mike Helou led Calvert Hall with
four goals in each game, while classmate Arny Warren had six scores,
including two in the finals.  Sophomore Archie Warren also had a huge
day, scoring once against McDonogh and netting a hat-trick in the
victory over Loyola.

John Stedding also contributed four goals,
including a hat-trick in the semifinal, while senior Josh Barnes had
two of his three goals in the championship game.

The Cardinals
played a pair of goalies in each contest, as junior Dave Kaun made
seven saves in each game, while sophomore Will McLennan had a two game
total of five stops.

“It was probably our most flawless game of
the season,” said Calvert Hall head coach Don Anderson of the Loyola
game.  “I felt we had been a little flat after our big win over the
Navy Aquatic Club.  I told our guys that I felt we were the best team
but we were going to have to put some fire in our hearts if we wanted
to win this weekend.  I believe we found the fire we needed”.

Loyola,
which defeated Mount St. Joseph in the other semifinal, entered the
final with hopes of ending Calvert Hall’s dominance, after taking the
Cardinals to the wire in an 11-10 loss last week.

Calvert Hall
will now travel to Princeton, New Jersey on Saturday where it will be
the #1 seed at the Easter Prep School Championships.

KEY BATTLES BACK TO CLINCH FIRST B CONFERENCE SOCCER PLAYOFF SLOT

KEY BATTLES BACK TO CLINCH FIRST B CONFERENCE SOCCER PLAYOFF SLOT

Key
School survived a tremendous effort by Saints Peter & Paul and
secured their first ever MIAA B Conference Soccer playoff appearence
with a 3-2 double overtime victory over the visiting Sabres, yesterday
in Annapolis.

Saints Peter & Paul jumped all over the
Obezags in first half, dominating much of the action and rushing out to
a 2-0 lead on a pair of goals by John Mlynarski.  Key, however, set the
stage for its comeback as Julian Maldonado scored a rebound goal as
time expired in the first half.

The Sabres continued to pepper
shots on the Obezag goal in the second half, but several fantastic
saves by sophomore Jake Maldonado kept the game close.  Charlie
Flanagan took a Maldonado pass and scored for the Obezags with 15
minutes remaining.  The game remained tied through the end of
regulation and the first overtime.  In the second overtime, senior
Glenn Gambrell of Key took the ball down the wing and sent a beautiful
cross to Maldonado who scored his second goal of the game and clinched
the playoff birth for the Obezags.

With the win, Key pulled even
with St. Mary’s, the defending B Conference champ, for third-place in
Division I.  By virtue of a win and a tie against the Saints, who have
completed their league play, Key owns the tie-breaker and will proceed
to the playoffs.  The Obezags can move into second-place and host a
quarterfinal playoff game, on Friday, if it can upset Division II
winner Boys’ Latin, today, in the regular season finale.

If Key
wins today, it will host Glenelg Country on Friday, while AACS would
travel to Park.  If the Obezags lose, they would go to Park, and
Glenelg Country would go to AACS.

Next Tuesday, Boys’ Latin will
host the winner of the game involving Glenelg Country, in one
semifinal, while Severn, which is unbeaten in league play this year and
the top seed in Division I, will host the winner of the game involving
Park, also on Tuesday.

The B Conference Championship Game will be played on Saturday, November 4 at St. Paul’s, at 3:00 pm.

Lutheran takes over second with 4-0 win over Beth Tfiloh

Chapelgate
Christian, the defending MIAA C Conference soccer champion, blanked
host Towson Catholic, 2-0, yesterday in Towson, for its fifth
consecutive win and the Yellowjackets now maintain a three-point lead
atop the league standings with just three games remaining prior to the

Senior Jim Becker led Chapelgate
(10-2-1, 6-1-0) with a goal and an assist and junior Jin-Min Jeong also

NO. 1 LOYOLA REMAINS UNBEATEN WITH A NARROW WIN OVER SPALDING, 27-30

NO. 1 LOYOLA REMAINS UNBEATEN WITH A NARROW WIN OVER SPALDING, 27-30

Despite
an individual win by Archbishop Spalding’s Rob Wetzel, top-ranked
Loyola bunched enough runners near the top to edge the host Cavaliers,
27-30, in a key MIAA A Conference cross country race, yesterday at
Kinder Park.

As they usually do, Loyola’s Greg Jubb (16:33) and
Ryan Stasiowski (16:46) ran in tandem and finished second and third,
respectively, to lead the Dons, while Matt Kaplan (17:36) and Joe
Orsulak (17:39) ran fifth and sixth, followed by ninth-place Johnny
McAuliffe.

It was enough to stave off the Spalding upset bid,
which was aided by a 4-5 finish by Greg Sullivan (17:15) and Trevor
Keane (17:17) and an eighth-place effort from J.R. Spencer (17:54).

The
victory allowed the Dons to improve to 7-0 in the A Conference and sets
up a showdown with Mount St. Joseph, which is also 7-0, next week

FABY’S SECOND HALF GOAL HELPS ST. PAUL’S TOP JOHN CARROLL

FABY’S SECOND HALF GOAL HELPS ST. PAUL’S TOP JOHN CARROLL

St.
Paul’s may not be headed to the MIAA A Conference soccer playoffs, but
the Crusaders certainly have made life difficult, on numerous
occasions, for those still maintaining championship aspirations,
including John Carroll, which fell in an attempt to further its
post-season hopes with a 1-0 loss to the Crusaders, yesterday in
Brooklandville.

The game-winning score was netted by St. Paulâ??s
freshman Mike Faby, with 12 minutes remaining in the second half, off
of a cross from George Banks, and goalkeeper Peter Windsor recorded
nine saves in the shutout.

In addition to overtime losses to #1
Archbishop Curley and #3 Calvert Hall, St. Paul’s (5-12-1, 4-11-1) owns
a win over #2 McDonogh and, now, a victory over fourth-place John
Carroll (8-6-1, 7-6-1).

The Patriots remain in solid position to
make the post season, as they sit in fourth-place, but a win yesterday
would have clinched a playoff spot.  With games left with Curley
(tomorrow) and Calvert Hall (Tuesday), John Carroll remains vulnerable
heading into the season’s final week.

Goal:

CALVERT HALL AND MCDONOGH RAIN DOWN GOALS IN LOPSIDED VICTORIES AS A CONFERENCE DRAWS TIGHT AGAIN

CALVERT
HALL AND MCDONOGH RAIN DOWN GOALS IN LOPSIDED VICTORIES AS A CONFERENCE
DRAWS TIGHT AGAIN

St. Joe and John Carroll battle to a scoreless tie

Calvert
Hall and McDonogh combined for 13 goals in a pair of lopsided MIAA A
Conference games, yesterday, and the top three teams in the A
Conference are again separated by just two points as we begin the final
eight days of the regular season.

The third-ranked Cardinals
(10-4-2, 9-2-2) stunned visiting Loyola with a five goal outburst as
they swept their regular season series with the Dons with a 5-1 win,
yesterday at Calvert Hall, and pulled within one-point of first-place
Archbishop Curley (10-3-0).

It was the second time in as many
days that Calvert Hall took a commanding first half lead and cruised to
a comfortable homefield win.  Christian Barreiro led the attack with
two goals and two assists, while sophomore Matt Tyrie had a goal and an
assist.  Joe Malstrom scored one goal, and junior defender Austin Abell
got his first varsity goal as well.

While that game was taking
place, second-ranked McDonogh was making life tough for Gilman, which
had absorbed the 5-0 loss to Calvert Hall one day earlier.  The Eagles
(11-2-1, 9-2-1), playing at home, got big efforts from several players
as they routed the Greyhounds, 8-0.

Senior Andrew Bulls led the
assault with two goals and two assists and he got plenty of help.
Senior Nick Kruter also netted two goals, junior Tyler Fiorito had
three assists and sophomore Chris Agorsor and freshman Jeremy Kirkwood
each had one goal and one assist.

With the win, McDonogh remains one-point behind Calvert Hall and two-points back of Curley.

Both
the Cardinals and Eagles will have a chance to pass the Friars, at
least temporarily, when they both return to action tomorrow.  Calvert
Hall will host St. Paul’s, while McDonogh will visit Mount St. Joseph,
which played a scoreless tie yesterday with John Carroll.  Curley does
not return to league action until Saturday morning when it hosts John
Carroll.

McDonogh’s remaining games include a home game with
Loyola on Tuesday, followed with showdowns with Calvert Hall and
Curley, at Calvert Hall next Wednesday and at McDonogh next Friday.  In
addition to St. Paul’s and McDonogh, Calvert Hall will travel to John
Carroll on Tuesday.

After its Saturday game with John Carroll,
Curley will visit St. Joe on Tuesday, before the potentially decisive
game at McDonogh.

With the one-point it earned for yesterday’s
tie, John Carroll (8-5-1, 7-5-1) edged one-point in front of Loyola
(8-10-0, 7-7-0) in the race for fourth-place, while maintaining its
three-point advantage over St. Joe (7-5-4, 5-4-4).

John Carroll
will play at St. Paul’s today, in addition to its games with Curley and
Calvert Hall.  Loyola, which has now lost three of its last four games,
will host Archbishop Spalding tomorrow, and can clinch its post-season
position with a win, before Tuesday’s finale at McDonogh.

St.
Joe, which has a three-point lead on Spalding for the sixth and final
playoff spot, will close its regular season against the Cavaliers, next
Thursday at home, in addition to its matches with McDonogh and Curley.

CURLEY STOPS MCDONOGH IN THE RAIN, 2-1; TOP RANKED FRIARS BUILD A FOUR-POINT LEAD IN THE A CONFERENCE

CURLEY
STOPS MCDONOGH IN THE RAIN, 2-1; TOP RANKED FRIARS BUILD A FOUR-POINT
LEAD IN THE A CONFERENCE

Calvert Hall routs Gilman, 5-0, to remain close

With
first place on the line, in a cold rain, top-ranked Archbishop Curley
outlasted third-ranked McDonogh, yesterday in a contest moved to Loyola
College, and claimed a crucial, 2-1, MIAA A Conference soccer victory
over the Eagles.  The win allowed the Friars to expand their narrow
lead at the top of the conference, as they battle down the stretch with
McDonogh and Calvert Hall for the top-seed heading into the playoffs.

With
the teams knotted at one, entering the second half, Curley senior Brent
Hooper netted the game winning goal, on a feed from senior Chris
Wright.  In the first half, Curley’s first goal was scored by senior
Sean Rothe and senior defenseman Vince Savarese provided the assist.
McDonogh’s lone goal game off the foot of sophomore Chris Agorsor and
it was unassisted.

Calvert Hall, which entered the day in
third-place, also was in action as it played through the rain on its
synthetic turf field and routed visiting Gilman, 5-0.

For the
Cardinals, senior defenders Chris Williams and Rob Lehnhoff scored on
restarts, and captain Eddie Tejeda added one on an assist from Tyler
King, as Calvert Hall took a 3-0 lead at the half.  King then added his
own in the second half and Brendan Steele finished the Cardinals’
scoring, on an assist from Tejeda.  Marco Mangione had two assists on
the day, and three Calvert Hall goalkeepers (Kyle Wittman, Mike
Brashears and Gino Zazzetta) combined for the shutout.

With the
victory, Calvert Hall (9-4-2, 8-2-2) slipped past McDonogh (10-2-1,
8-2-1) into second-place.  Curley (15-3-0, 10-3-0) leads Calvert Hall
by four points and McDonogh by five.

Curley has just three
league games left, including a rematch with McDonogh, on Friday,
October 27 at McDonogh.  The Friars, who will play Perry Hall in a
non-conference game tomorrow, also play John Carroll on Saturday before
closing the regular season at Mount St. Joseph, next Tuesday.

McDonogh
still must sort through five league games, including a home match today
against Gilman.  The Eagles will also be at St. Joe on Friday, at home
against Loyola next Tuesday and, at Calvert Hall next Wednesday, before
finishing against Curley.

Calvert Hall hosts Loyola today and
St. Paul’s on Friday, before going to John Carroll on Tuesday and
welcoming McDonogh on Wednesday.

With so much action still to be played, the race remains wide open.

Archbishop Curley 2, McDonogh 1
Goals:

LOYOLA EMERGES FROM HIGH SCORING SECOND HALF TO EDGE TO ST. PAUL’S, 3-2

LOYOLA
EMERGES FROM HIGH SCORING SECOND HALF TO EDGE TO ST. PAUL’S, 3-2

Dons move closer to a playoff spot; A Conference playoff scenarios

In
a must win situation, Loyola followed a scoreless first-half by
outscoring St. Paul’s, 3-2, in the second half of their MIAA A
Conference soccer game, yesterday at Blakefield, to claim a critical
league win and inch closer to a playoff spot.

The Dons (8-9-0,
7-6-0), who shared the A Conference title with St. Joe last fall, are
now tied with John Carroll for fourth-place in the Conference, with
three games to play.  Both teams, however, need to keep on picking up
points as Mount St. Joseph, the other 2005 co-champion, and Archbishop
Spalding still remain in contention for one of the six playoff
positions.

Loyola, which also defeated St. Paul’s, 1-0, in
double overtime earlier this year, received its goals from Jon Corbin,
Mike Deasel and Gerard Savarese, while Pat Doyle and Steven LeVine
added assists for the Dons.

In the loss, St. Paul’s (4-12-1, 3-11-0) got two goals from senior James Swartz.

If
it succeeds in reaching the post-season, Loyola will have to earn it.
The Dons three remaining games include a visit to #2 Calvert Hall,
tomorrow, a visit from Spalding on Friday and a road match at #3
McDonogh, next Tuesday.  Loyola currently leads St. Joe, which has four
games left, by three points and Spalding, which has three league
contests remaining, by five points.  One more win should put Loyola in
the playoffs and a win over Spalding would guarantee it.

In
addition to the game with Loyola, Spalding has a huge match at St. Joe
today and will close at Gilman, next Tuesday.  St. Joe’s other
remaining league games include a trip to John Carroll tomorrow, and
home matches with McDonogh, on Friday, and top-ranked Archbishop
Curley, next Tuesday.

In an effort to fulfill its post-season
aspirations, John Carroll (8-5-0, 7-5-0) also must navigate a brutal
closing schedule.  In addition to tomorrow’s game with St. Joe, the
Patriots will be at St. Paul’s, today, and at Curley, on Saturday
morning, before closing with a home game with Calvert Hall, next
Tuesday.

At the top of the Conference, Curley (14-3-0, 9-3-0)
and McDonogh (10-1-1, 9-3-0), which battle today in Owings Mills in the
first of two late-season meetings, have already clinched playoff spots,
but each still needs points to lock up one of the top two seeds, which
provide first-round byes and home field advantage for the semifinals.
The Friars will host the Eagles on Sunday (1:00 pm), in addition to
their remaining games with John Carroll and St. Joe.

The other
prime contender for one of those spots is Calvert Hall (8-4-2, 7-2-2).
The Cardinals, who will host Gilman today, have a league-high five
games remaining, giving them an excellent opportunity to improve their
third-place standing.  After tomorrow’s home game with Loyola, Calvert
Hall will host St. Paul’s on Friday, visit John Carroll, next Tuesday,
and close with McDonogh, at home, next Wednesday.

The bottom
line is that seven teams remain very much alive for six spots and all
six seeds remain wide open.  The next two days will provide some
answers, but everything could come down to the final day of the regular
season.  Stay tuned.

CALVERT HALL WATER POLO CLAIMS ITS FIRST WIN OVER NAVY AQUATICS TO WIN U-19 DIVISION AT GEORGE MASON

CALVERT HALL WATER POLO CLAIMS ITS FIRST WIN OVER NAVY AQUATICS TO WIN U-19 DIVISION AT GEORGE MASON

Calvert
Hall’s varsity water polo team improved to 19-2 on the season with
three wins at the George Mason University Invitational, this weekend,
including a thrilling, 17-16, victory over the Naval Academy Aquatics
Club in the championship game of the Under-19 Division.  It was Calvert
Hall’s first ever win over the Navy team.

Calvert Hall was
unable to stop the high-powered Navy offense, led by U.S. National
Youth Team member Max Schlagel, but the Cards were able to match the
scoring of the Midshipmen as junior Mike Helou enjoyed his best game of
2006 and scored seven goals.  The Cardinals also got hat-tricks from
junior Arny Warren and senior Josh Barnes, as well two goals from
senior John Stedding.  In addition, sophomore Archie Warren and senior
Chad Eskridge each netted one goal.

Earlier in the tournament, Calvert Hall also defeated DC Polo, 19-1, and Gonzaga (DC), 19-7.

Calvert
Hall leads the MIAA with a 7-0 league record and has only one regular
season match left, on October 23, at arch-rival Loyola.  Prior to that,
the Cardinals may meet Navy again, when they compete in the Annapolis
Classic, this Friday.

MOUNT ST. JOE UNLOADS ON CHESAPEAKE, 48-0

MOUNT ST. JOE UNLOADS ON CHESAPEAKE, 48-0

After
consecutive heart-breaking losses to MIAA A Conference rivals Loyola
and Gilman, the Mount St. Joseph football team traveled to Eastern
Baltimore County, yesterday afternoon, in search of a win and a little
relief from a brutal schedule which has matched them up against most of
the top teams from both Baltimore and Washington and contributed to a
1-5 start.  The Gaels took advantage, as they scored on the opening
kickoff and unloaded some frustrations during a 48-0, non-conference,
rout of host Chesapeake-BC.

Senior Jared Ricks got the show
rolling as he took the opening kick 90-yards to begin a 28-point first
quarter for the Gaels (2-5).  Junior safety Rod White followed with a
10-yard fumble return for a touchdown and Ricks added a 20-yard
touchdown run to push the lead to 21-0.

Sophomore quarterback
Chris Costabile then found classmate Chris Collins for a 41-yard
touchdown pass and then opened the second quarter with a 22-yard
scoring strike to junior Quentin Jones.

By halftime the Gaels,
which led both Loyola and Gilman in the fourth quarter over the last
two weeks, had completed their scoring and accomplished their objective.

Next
week, it’s back to the rigors of the MIAA A Conference as St. Joe hosts
Georgetown Prep and the following week it will travel to Ohio to face
national power Steubenville, before closing with a home game against
Calvert Hall on November 4.
