Second-ranked
St. Paul’s beat Gilman, 8-7, in MIAA A Conference lacrosse, on Friday
afternoon at Tullai Field.  In front of a sun-drenched crowd the
Crusaders came out slow but surged ahead in the second and third
quarters with leads of 6-3 and 8-5, respectively.  With the victory St.
Paul’s, now 7-1 overall and 2-0 in conference, remains unbeaten in

Midfielder Chris Clements dashed through Gilman
defenders all day to lead all scorers with three goals.  Attackman D.J.
Hessler quarterbacked the offense from behind the net scoring one goal
and adding an assist.  Attackman Adam Johnston fired in a goal as did
midfielders Thomas Galvin, Justin Donati, and Peter Smyth.

Goalkeeper
Stu Wheeler had another big game for St. Paul’s, making 12 saves as
well as several good decisions clearing the ball out of the defensive
zone.  Scott Matthews made the defensive play of the game late in the
fourth quarter when he drove a Gilman attackman to the turf, quickly
scooped up the ground ball and found an open man up field.  Defenders
John Windsor, Ty Boykin, Leks Gerlak, Peter Windsor, and Chris Wilson
all had a hand in shutting down a young, talented Gilman team that lit
up the scoreboard for 14 goals in their previous game.

Gilman
was paced by three goals from sophomore Jack Doyle.  In addition, the
Greyhounds received two scores from junior Evan Redwood and three
assists from sophomore Davey Emala.

ST. PAUL’S KNOCKS OFF #1 SPALDING, 1-0, AS THREE CRUSADERS COMBINE ON A TWO-HIT SHUTOUT

In
a classic pitching dual, #10 St. Paul’s used three pitchers to limit
top-ranked Archbishop Spalding to just two hits and no runs, edging
Cavalier ace Paul Devito, 1-0, for a MIAA A Conference baseball win,
yesterday at St. Paul’s.

Matt March made the start and went five
shutout innings to get the win for the Crusaders, but was relieved in
the sixth with no outs and a runner on first.  Colin Majev followed and
walked the first hitter he faced, before getting the first out on a
sacrifice bunt which advanced the Cavalier base-runners to second and
third.  Senior Louey Mari then came on to end the threat by striking
out Spalding slugger Ryan Woods and coaxing a fly ball from Jason
Patten. Mari then pitched a scoreless seventh to earn the save.

St.
Paul’s scored its lone run in the bottom of the second when Brenden
Carlson led off the inning with a double down the third base line and
advanced to third on a ground out by Mari.  Sean Perkins then walked on
four pitches putting Crusaders on the corners and setting the stage for
a successful squeeze by Ryan Clayton, which delivered the only run of
the game.

DeVito went the distance for the Cavaliers and allowed
just two hits while suffering his first loss of the year.  He also hit
a triple.

With the win, St. Paul’s improves to 6-4 on the year
and 3-0 in the A Conference, where it shares the early lead with
Calvert Hall.  Spalding is now 11-2 overall as it drops to 2-1 in the

CALVERT HALL SCORES 10 IN FINAL THREE FRAMES TO DUMP CURLEY, 11-1

four innings, second-ranked Calvert Hall and host Archbishop Curley
were locked in a pitchers dual yesterday at Curley.  The visiting
Cardinals, however, erupted for four runs in the fifth and five more in

yesterday afternoon.

Despite the slow start the Cardinals
eventually took to the cozy confines at Curley and blasted four home
huns, as John Collingsworth, Bobby Corton, Kevin Lingerman and Drew
Burton all went deep.

Nick Caddick threw into the sixth inning
for Calvert Hall to pick up the win, as the Friars were limited to just
four base hits on the afternoon.

Sean Thompson made the start
for Curley and did job of holding down the potent Cardinal lineup until

BOYS’ LATIN CONTINUES HOT START, LAKERS DEFEAT PALLOTTI, 10-5, TO IMPROVE TO 4-0

Boys’
Latin, which finished in first place during the regular season last
year in the MIAA B Conference baseball standings, only to lose two
straight at the start of the double-elimination playoff tournament,
looks as if it has designs on getting another shot at that position.
To that end, the Lakers traveled to Laurel yesterday and pounded out 10
hits and 10 runs in a 10-5 league win over two-time defending champion
St. Vincent Pallotti.

Junior Austin Knight keyed the offense
with a double and a triple and junior Josh Winter tripled.  The Lakers
(4-0, 3-0) also got doubles from senior Matt Trimmer and Huntley
Mitchell.

BL took control with five runs in the top of the
second and added two more in the third and the fourth to build a 9-0
advantage.  Pallotti (4-3, 2-1) answered with two in the fourth and
three more in the fifth, but it was not enough on this afternoon.

Junior
Devon Jerrard was the winning pitcher for Boys’ Latin as he started and
went five innings and senior Matt Warheim pitched the final two frames
to close out the win.

Pallotti’s only extra-base hit of the day was a double off the bat of junior catcher Kieran Flannery.

JOHN CARROLL RALLIES TO TIE, BUT LOYOLA WINS, 4-3, IN NINE INNINGS

With
Loyola and John Carroll locked in a 3-3 tie headed to the bottom of the
ninth in their MIAA A Conference baseball match-up, yesterday at
Blakefield, junior Ryan McQuitty propelled the Dons to a 4-3 win with a
game-winning at-bat to leadoff of the bottom of the seventh.

Looking
to start a rally before darkness would suspend the game, McQuitty
jumped on a pitch in his wheel house and drove the gab in
right-centerfield for a triple and when the relay throw was mishandled
by the Patriots, McQuitty raced home with the winning run.

John
Carroll out-hit Loyola, 9-7, on the afternoon, but only managed to
score in one inning.  Trailing 3-0 heading into the top of the seventh,
John Carroll rallied to tie on a two-out, three run triple by junior
Joey Loiodice.

Kirby, who started, went even innings and came within one batter of a

GREENE SCORES 10 FOR EAST SQUAD IN MCDONALD’S ALL-AMERICAN GAME

GREENE SCORES 10 FOR EAST SQUAD IN MCDONALD’S ALL-AMERICAN GAME

GreeneSlam.jpg
Donte
Greene prepares to release the rim after slamming through two of his 10
points in last night’s McDonald’s All-American game in Louisville.

Playing
amongst the top high school seniors in the nation, all bound for big
time college basketball programs and perhaps beyond, Towson Catholic’s
Donte Greene proved he belonged with the elite during a strong 17
minute performance last night at the McDonald’s All-American basketball
game, in Louisville, Kentucky.

Before a national television
audience, and more than 11,000 fans at Freedom Hall, Greene scored 10
points by going 4-of-7 from the field, including one three-pointer, and
hitting 1-of-2 free throws.  The 6′-10″ University of Syracuse recruit
also had two rebounds and an assist, as well as a rim rattling
two-handed slam.

Greene’s East squad fell to the West, 114-112, but the final score was hardly relevant.

Next,
Greene will travel to New York, on April 21, to play with many of the
same players in the Jordan Brand All-American Game at Madison Square
Garden.

THREE FRIENDS PITCHERS SHUT DOWN ST. JOHN’S, 7-1, IN RAIN SHORTENED CONTEST

Three
Friends pitchers combined on a two-hit performance and freshman Leland
Nislow broke a scoreless tie with a two-run, second-inning triple to
lead the Quakers to a 7-1 MIAA B Conference baseball victory over
visiting St. John’s Catholic Prep, yesterday at Medfield Heights, in a
contest that was halted after six innings because of rain.

ST. PAUL’S RALLIES FOR ANOTHER OVERTIME WIN – 10-9 AGAINST CALVERT HALL

ST. PAUL’S RALLIES FOR ANOTHER OVERTIME WIN – 10-9 AGAINST CALVERT HALL

Galvin nets his second game winner

The
St. Paul’s lacrosse team loves making things interesting.  The “cardiac
kids” needed overtime again to defeat a hard-working, run and gun,
Calvert Hall team, 10-9, in a MIAA A Conference battle, yesterday on
Tullai Field in Brooklandville.

After finally jumping out to a
big lead to start a game at 5-0, early in the 2nd period, the Crusaders
seemed to simply run out of gas and enthusiasm as the Cardinals rattled
off seven unanswered goals in a furious comeback to capture a 7-5 lead
midway through the third stanza.  St. Paul’s responded to knot the
score at 7-7, only to see that tie evaporate as Calvert Hall went back
on top 9-7 with just under four minutes to play in the contest.  The
Crusiaders rallied again to tie the score at 9 with two minutes left in
the game and neither team could muster the winning goal in regulation.

In
a familiar spot, overtime, the Crusies lost the face-off but held off
the Cardinals, cleared the zone and Thomas Galvin fired home the game
winner on a overhand rocket from 10 yards.  It was Galvin’s second
game-winning, sudden victory goal of the season, the other coming
against Haverford (PA) in the season opener.

St. Paul’s was led
by Adam Johnston’s four goals.  Cliff Larkin added a goal and three
assists, while Galvin had two scores.  The Crusaders also received
single goals from Chris Clements, Tim Gaines, and Ben Sindler.  In
addition, D.J. Hessler added two assists while Sindler and Zach Linkous
each added an assist.  Goalie Stu Wheeler recorded 10 saves for the
Crusies.
