GILMAN SHUTS DOWN LOYOLA, 5-0

Gilman,
which made a late charge last season which carried it all the way to
the “if” game of the MIAA A Conference baseball tournament, before
falling to Calvert Hall, looks as if it is ready to make another run
this year.  Yesterday, the Greyhounds shutout Loyola, 5-0, to improve
to 3-0 on the season and 2-0 in the A Conference.

Senior J.B. Cooke was the winning as he went the distance, allowing just two hits to earn the shutout.

Gilman took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first and then took control with a four-run fourth.

Junior Derrick Burnett doubled in the contest and junior Sam Frank added a triple.

With the loss, Loyola dropped to 1-2 overall and 1-1 in the league.

PARK DOWNS PALLOTTI, 7-5, IN REMATCH OF B CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP LACROSSE GAME

PARK DOWNS PALLOTTI, 7-5, IN REMATCH OF B CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP LACROSSE GAME

A rematch is hardly ever a true “rematch” in the sense of the word.
Seniors graduate, freshman enter, keys players can change roles. This
year’s team is never the same as last year’s team. That being said,
yesterday’s MIAA lacrosse game between Park and St. Vincent Pallotti
was still a “rematch” of the teams in last year’s B Conference
championship game, won by Pallotti, 10-9. This year, Park avenged that
loss to a degree, handing the Panthers a 7-5 defeat, in Brooklandville.

It’s far too early to predict the
teams in this year’s championship game, but Park made sure of one thing
– there would be no perfect season repeat for Pallotti (1-1, 3-2), as
the Panthers had gone through the MIAA last year with an unblemished
13-0 mark, and the title.

The Bruins improved to 2-0 in-league
and 3-0 overall. They wasted no time, jumping out to a 5-1 lead at the
half.  Pallotti rallied, winning the second half, 4-2, but it was not
enough to overcome the deficit, as Park prevailed. Junior Colin Smith
registered three goals for Park and senior Oliver Weinberg added a pair
of goals and an assist. Senior Max Struever manned the goal, with one
save.

Junior Russ Lanham matched Smith with
three goals, and also chipped in one assist. Sophomore Matt Ragsdale
had two assists and junior Mark Vorce contributed 15 saves in goal.

Park next faces Annapolis Area
Christian, on Friday. The two met just last week, with Park taking an
11-9 win. Pallotti has a non-league game on Saturday versus Good
Counsel.

Park 7, St. Vincent Pallotti 5
Goals: SVP–Lanham 3, Ragsdale, Dean; P–Smith 3, Weinberg 2, Levin, Matz. Assists: SVP–Ragsdale 2, Lanham, Dean, Leonard; P–Levin, Weinberg. Saves: SVP–Vorce 15. P–Struever.
Half: Park, 5-1.

FIRST-HALF DEFENSE KEY FOR MOUNT ST. JOE’S IN A CONFERENCE LACROSSE WIN

Gaels blank Admirals in opening half of 7-5 game

As they say, “defense wins games.” Defense
certainly had a hand in yesterday’s 7-5 Mount St. Joseph lacrosse win
over Severn, in Baltimore, as the Gaels held the Admirals scoreless in
the opening half. It was the first game of MIAA league play for both
teams.

The Severn defense wasn’t shabby, either,
but Mount St. Joe (1-0, 3-0) was able to put three goals on the board
in the first half, and led, 3-0, at the break. The #9 Admiral made a
comeback in the second half, and actually won that half, 5-4, but the
early lead stood up for the Gaels at game’s end.

Senior middie Matt Hanzsche scored two
goals in the win, while five other teammates scored one goal
each.Senior Ryan Mulford dished out two assists. Senior goalie Jon
Rodriquez made nine saves.

Senior Chase Loetz scored two goals to lead Severn (0-1, 3-2), while McGravey had five saves.

SUMMERS SCORES 20 TO LEAD GEORGETOWN TO THE FINAL FOUR

SUMMERS SCORES 20 TO LEAD GEORGETOWN TO THE FINAL FOUR

SummersNCAA.jpg
McDonogh
graduate DeJuan Summers (left) scored 20 points in yesterday’s 96-84
come-from-behind victory to help lead Georgetown to the East Regional
Final and a spot in the 2007 Final Four, next Saturday in Atlanta. (AP)

The MIAA has made its impact on the NCAA Tournament once again.

DaJuan
Summers, just a year removed from the conclusion of a spectacular MIAA
basketball career at McDonogh, scored 20 points in yesterday’s NCAA
Tournament East Regional Final, as second-seeded Georgetown stormed
back from a 16-point second half deficit to knock off top-seeded North
Carolina, 96-84, in overtime, and gain entry into next week’s Final
Four in Atlanta.

Summers has steadily improved since entering
Georgetown’s starting lineup early in the season and many believe he
has been the key ingredient in the Hoyas 30-6 season, thus far.

Yesterday
at Continental Airlines Arena in East Rutherford, New Jersey, the 6′-9″
forward played 35 minutes and hit 7-of-10 field goal attempts,
including 2-of-3 three-point attempts.  He was also 4-for-4 from the
free throw line, grabbed six rebounds, blocked two shots and had a
steal.

Summers also capped a 14-0 Georgetown run in overtime
with powerful slam dunk over a fallen Tyler Hansbrough, North
Carolina’s talented sophomore center.

BRUINS AND SABRES BOTH WIN, BUT BARELY, IN B CONFERENCE LACROSSE

In
a pair of MIAA B Conference lacrosse games on Friday, Park and Sts.

Park (1-0, 2-0) won its league opener
on the road, as the Bruins took a 6-3 halftime lead and then survived a
closer second half to hang on for the two-goal win. Senior Joe Press

scored three goals and had one assist, and Smith went for two and two.
Senior Oliver Weinberg scored a pair, and senior goalie Max Streuver
notched eight saves.

For Annapolis Area Christian (0-2, 1-2), Will  Hanchett tallied three goals and one assist and Drew Kuechler had  a goal and four assists.

Park resides in the Black Division of
the B, and is tied with St. Vincent Pallotti, both at 1-0 in the young
season. They will decise who gets the early claim on first place when
the Panthers travel to Park next Tuesday.
