ST. JOE, SPALDING SWEEP A PAIR

by Joe DiBlasi

Four MIAA baseball teams gathered at Gambrills Park, on Sunday, and A Conference powers Mount St. Joseph and Archbishop Spalding each swept two games, taking turns topping St. Vincent Pallotti and Boys’ Latin of the B Conference.

In it’s first game, St. Joe got into a slugfest with Pallotti, as the Panthers jumped in front with five run first, after the Gaels scored three in the top half of the inning.  The Gaels regained the lead with a five run second and went in front 14-5 with a six run fourth. Pallotti, however, got back within four a single run in the home half of the fifth and four in four in the sixth.  The Panthers would get no closer

Will Staso was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI for St. Joe, while Craig Howser hit a three-run homer scored three runs.  Ryan Kemp also scored three times for the Gaels and went 2-for-3 at the plate.

P.J. Martindale led Pallotti by going 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBI.  Kevin Hughes was 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Adam Goodman was 2-for-3 with three RBI on a bases loaded triple.

In the second game, sophomore Zach Spahn limited BL to just three hits, as the Gaels won 9-1.  Sophomore Michael Draper hit a double for the games only extra-base hit.

Spalding won a tight battle with Boys’ Latin, 3-1, as Matt Hillsinger drove in the winning runs with a two-run single in the fourth inning.  Jared **** went the distance on the mound to get the win for the Cavaliers.

Against Pallotti, Spalding scored 12 times to top the free-swinging Panthers, 12-7.

The weekend was not a complete loss for Pallotti.  On Saturday, it got a three-run triple from Mark Brady, in the bottom of the seventh, to steal a come-from-behind, 8-7, MIAA B Conference victory from defending champion St. Mary’s.

CALVERT HALL WINS TWO ON NEW TURF

by Joe DiBlasi

Calvert Hall returned from a tough road trip in California, where they went 1-3 in the Anderson Bat Classic, on  Friday night, but the Cards woke up on Saturday morning and found a brand new turf field waiting for them.  The luster and shine of the brilliant green synthetic surface of Crispino Stadium quickly took away the sting of their western swing and the Cardinals responded with two impressive wins.

Calvert Hall christened the new playing surface with impressive wins over Elmira, NY, 8-2, and Dulaney High, 13-3, in a spring break tourney that was previously scheduled for Dulaney.

“I stopped by the field in the morning and the mound was ready,” said Cardinal skipper Lou Eckerl.  “We had a chance to play on the new turf a week sooner than expected.” (The field will be formally dedicated on April 7  with a scheduled game against the Loyola Dons).

Greg Terry was the first chucker to throw in game conditions on the new matt, and he went five innings, surrendering just one hit.  “This was a huge thrill,” said Terry. “This really is the field of dreams.”

Luke Sawyer had a triple and an RBI against  Elimra and Joe Robak had a double and scored twice against the New Yorkers.

Luke Trout was 2-for-3 and drove in two runs,  Patrick Fitzgerald had two hits, and Kevin Lingerman was 1-3 with a double and three RBI against Dulaney. Three Hall hurlers held the Lions to five hits in five innings.

KIRBY & TAYLOR LIMIT PATRIOTS TO ONE HIT

by Joe DiBlasi

Senior right-hander Bobby Kirby gave up a line single to right, off the bat of John Carroll freshman K.J. Hockaday in the top of the first inning, and that was the only hit that the Patriots would get on the day, as Kirby and Junior lefty Ryan Taylor combined for a one-hit shutout in Loyola’s 7-0 MIAA A Conference victory over visiting John Carroll, Saturday at Blakefield.

Kirby, who had posted a 1.59 ERA last season, is at it again.  After tossing a five-inning no-hitter against Georgetown Prep, over spring break, the dominant senior has allowed no runs and just one hit in 10 innings of work, to start the season 2-0.

On Saturday, Loyola coach Mike DelGaudio sent left-hander Ryan Taylor to the hill for the last two innings, and Taylor retired six of the seven batters he faced.

The tandem retried the Patriots in order in all but the first and sixth innings.  Kirby retired the last nine batters he faced, fanning the final four.  Counting srimmages, Taylor has struck out 27 in 20 innings of work so far this spring. He has given up one earned run in that span.

Loyola scored in the first inning when Taylor walked, and Drew Hoppes doubled to left. They got three more in the third, without the benefit of a hit. Two walks, two Patriot errors and a fielders choice gave the Dons a 4-0 lead.

“We’re playing well right now,” said DelGuadio.  “We’re getting good pitching, solid defense, and timely hitting.”

Kirby, whose younger brother Ryan is a freshman catcher for John Carroll, had a cance to pitch to his brother in the fifth and Ryan went down swinging.

“It would have hard to go home tonight if Ryan had gotten a hit,” said the older brother.  “John Carroll has four freshmen on their team, and I’m proud that he’s one of them.”

CAVALIERS BEAT CRUSADERS BEHIND JACKSON, 5-3

by Joe DiBlasi

Jason Patton and Matt Hillsinger drilled back-to-back home runs, in the bottom of the fourth, backing up strong pitching by three Archbishop Spalding hurlers and lifting the host Cavaliers to 5-3 MIAA A Conference baseball victory over Cardinal Gibbons, yesterday in Severna Park.

Spalding junior left-hander Matt Jackson started on the hill and tossed five strong innings, holding a potent Gibbons line-up to six singles and a wind-blown double.  He got scoreless relief from Jeff Kemp, who pitched the sixth, and Patton, who came on in the seventh to close out the contest.

“I used a two-seam and a four seam fastball today, and mixed in a curve ball,” said Jackson.  ” I had to step up with Paul [DeVito] out.”

The Cavaliers took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second, but Gibbons got two of their own in the top of the fourth. Crusader third baseman Robbie Harris, who was 3-for-3 on the day, scored Gibbons’ first run on a fielders choice and Blake Thompson, who reached on the fielder’s choice, eventally scored on a single by Dominic Fratatuno.

The Cavaliers quickly answered, in the bottom of the inning, when Patton slammed an opposite field homer to right-center, into the wind, and left-fielder Matt Hillsinger followed with a shot of his own, to right, to give the Cavaliers a 4-2 lead.  The Cavs would get one more in the fourth off of Gibbons starter Ryan Staton, on a single by Kemp and a double by Kody Hines.

Kemp came on in the sixth, yielding a harmless single off the bat of Staton, and Patton retired the side in order in the seventh.

“I was very satisfied with our pitching, and the bats are starting to come to life,” said Cavaliers coach Steve Miller.  “This was a big confidence builder for Matt (Jackson); he was very successful at the JV level, and this was his first MIAA win.”

“I’ve got to give Spalding a lot of credit; they hit well, they got good pitching, and they made the plays defensively,” said Gibbons Coach Lee Schwartzenberg.

Things won’t get any easier for Schwartzenberg, as St.Paul’s visits the Babe Ruth Field on Monday.

LEON KINNARD IS OFF TO UCONN

Loyola’s Leon Kinnard, who led the Dons to consecutive MIAA A Conference titles and is 19-2 as a starter, told DigitalSports that he has committed to UCONN for a full football scholarship.

“I went up yesterday morning, got there about 10 a.m., toured the football facility and walked around. I liked everything about the school, so at around 4:30 p.m. yesterday, I told them that I was ready to committ,” Kinnard said.

“I like everything about it. Coach Randy Edsall does a great job not only with the football team, but with the academic part as well,” said Kinnard. “He has people helping students. He keeps up with the students through the teachers. And they’re also offering me an opportunity that no other Division I school was offering, which is the chance to play quarterback.”

A 5-foot-10, 185-pounder, Kinnard said the coaches have told him that his versatility as a player could make him valuable at other offensive positions.

FRIARS STEAMROLL PARK

by Andrew Straub

See video highlights below

“When they’re falling for you, they’re falling for you.”

Modest words spoken by Archbishop Curley senior Brandon Capaletti, who found the net seven times to lead the defending MIAA B conference champions to a 19-5 rout of Park School, Thursday afternoon in Brooklandville.  The game was a rematch of last’s B Conference title game.

Having already tallied four goals in the first three quarters of play, Capaletti saved his best performance for the end of the game.  After scoring one minute into the fourth quarter, spectators were wondering what more the attackman could possibly have left in his tank.  Their question was answered some 45 seconds later, as Cappaletti dove for a pass at the left end of the crease and rifled a shot from his backside, finding an impossible angle past Bruin goalie Arthur Sonnenfeld to seal the victory for the Friars.

“He [Capaletti] had a special day.  He plays within our offense and then he maximizes his ability,” said Friars head coach Josiah LaTona, who was previously winless at the Park school in his nine years as coach.  “He shoots the ball in the proper spots.  He takes his shots when he should.  He doesn’t try to do too much. He’s a special player and were happy to have that.”

After three first half goals each from Capaletti and senior Jeff Taylor, the Friars took a 7-3 lead into halftime.  But Park scored with 5:53 remaining to cut its deficit to three goals, as the Curley sideline began to grow nervous.

“They’ve comeback against us, I don’t know how many times, and beaten us in the past.  You have to be weary of that,” said LaTona.  “We told them that: it’s what you do in the third quarter; its what you do in the fourth quarter that wins games’ not what happens in the first two.”

But the Friars were able to shake the memories of past letdowns, as senior Kevin Ruth took a pass from junior Ben Kimbel, who also had a huge day with seven assists, and started a tirade of ten unanswered Curley goals.

“This is huge. Coming in here we hadn’t won here in the nine years I’ve been coach.  So that was a real goal of ours today,” said LaTona.  “To come out play well, execute and get a ‘W.’ I thought our kids did that.”

Kimbel also added four goals to go along with six assists.

In goal, Mike Lioi had seven saves for the Friars and Sonnenfeld finished with 13 for Park.

Asked of his team’s 12 goal performance in the second half, Cappaletti was not surprised by his teams relentless attack and hopes this will get the notice of critics and opponents alike.

“I felt toward the beginning of the season we were underestimated a little bit.  We got an honorable mention in the newspaper but, we didn’t really get ranked,” said Capaletti.  “I feel like a game like this will definitely help us to get some recognition within the lacrosse community.”

The Friars (2-0) will be looking to defend their B conference title as league competition will now begin full throttle Next, they face Saints Peters & Paul on Tuesday.  Park (0-1) will also play again on Tuesday, as they visit St. Vincent Palotti.

With a target on their backs, LaTona knows his Friars cannot take any game for granted.

“Our league is tough.  We can’t take anyone lightly by any means.  We had a very good season last year but like I told these kids all the time. That was last year and nothing matters,” said LaTona.  “Its what we do game in and game out.”

FRITZ FIRES ONE-HITTER AS FRIARS WIN OPENING ROUND IN HILLTOP TOURNEY

by Joe DiBlasi

Archbishop Curley right-hander Keith Fritz carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning at Orange High School, near Chapel Hill, N.C., and settled for a one-hit gem as undefeated Archbishop Curley knocked off Wesleyan Christian Academy, 5-0, in the opening round of the Hilltop Tournament, on Thursday.

The Friars coming off a big 2-1 MIAA A Conference win over St. Paul’s, on Wednesday, are now 6-0 this season.

Fritz lost his no-hit bid in the top of the sixth, but his main focus remained on winning.   “I was aware of the situation in the fifth, but when I gave up the hit, I tried not to let it get to me,” said the 6-1  senior.   “It was more important for us to get the win.”

After the single, Fritz walked two batters, but was able to pitch out of it.  The Curley defense turned a nifty double-play to end the inning and keep the shut-out in tact.  Wesleyan, last year’s North Carolina state champion, lost for the first time this year, after opening the season 7-0.

The Friars were paced at the plate by hard-hitting third-sacker Jon Sobczynski, who doubled home the first run of the game in the second inning. The Friars would extend their lead to 3-0 on a two-run double by Mike O’Neil.

Matt Wilson, who was the defsnsive hero agaisnt St. Paul’s, also chipped in with a two-bagger.

“Keith was outstanding,” said Curley coach Jack Thomas, now in his fourth year with the Friars.  “He kept them off balance and pithed a very smart game.”

Curley advances to the winners bracket at 7:00 p.m.tomorrow.

COFFMAN SET TO LEAD GILMAN WATER POLO

Gilman School has announced the appointment of Laura Coffman at its new varsity water polo head coach, replacing Jody Driscol, who has stepped aside but will remain with the team in the role of associate head coach, beginning with the fall 2008 season.

Coffman is making history as the first female varsity head coach at Gilman, but it is not personal history for her. She broke that barrier as a member of the men’s water polo team at the University of Illinois, where she also earned a BS in biolog and a MS in biological sciences.  She also competed in the US Olympic Festival, on the U.S. Women’s Junior National Team and the U.S. Women’s National B Team.

Her coaching career includes stints as the girls head water polo coach with the Latin School of Chicago and the York Community High School in Elmhurst, IL.  She has also been the Chicago Apostles Club team head coach, an assistant coach for the San Diego Shores Club (CA) and the Windy City Club in Chicago.  Nationally, she served as an assistant coach with the U.S. Women’s National Youth team in 1996-97.

Driscoll, who has been Gilman’s head coach since 2004, will remain in his primary role as Aquatics Director at Gilman.  His best year came last fall when his Greyhounds upset McDonogh in the regular season finale to reach the MIAA playoffs, where they were eliminated by perennial super power Calvert Hall, in the semifinals.
