PALLOTTI TOPPLES SEVERN SCHOOL

by Alejandro Danois

See video interviews below.

St. Vincent Pallotti High boys’ basketball claimed sole possession of second place in the MIAA B Conference South division, defeating Severn School , 55-41, Tuesday evening in Anne Arundel County.

Senior guard Anthony Cook scored 19 points to lead the Panthers (10-8 overall, 6-4 league), and sophomore Eric Washington posted 13 points and a game-high 26 rebounds. Ben Montgomery had nine points to lead Severn (9-9, 4-6).

Trailing by as many as 17 points in the second half, the Admirals got within five before Pallotti reasserted itself. Panthers coach Shae Johnson was pleased to get the win in Anne Arundel County playing most of the game without Leon Porter, who had flu-like symptoms.

“This is a hard building to play in, we were without our point guard and we had some silly turnovers early on,” said Johnson. “But we played with composure and did the things we needed to do as a team to win.”

Cook took control of the Panther offense in the second half, scoring 13 points. He opened the third quarter with a lay up, followed by an open court fast break dunk that put Pallotti ahead, 33-19. With four minutes left in the quarter, the Panthers were firmly in the driver’s seat at 37-20.

“At the beginning of the game, I was trying to get into the flow but as soon as I made some lay-ups,” said Cook, “I tried to continue getting to the rim and not settle for jump shots,” said Cook.

“Ryan put in a lot of work during the off season and he did what we needed him to do, and that’s go to the basket,” said Johnson. “He’s our leading scorer and second leading rebounder and he played very well tonight. And Eric had 26 rebounds, which is unheard of. He’s only a sophomore and he’s got a lot of skill work to do this summer, but he has a chance, by far, to be the greatest player I’ve ever coached.”

Severn methodically inched back in the game, spurred by two baskets each by Marvin Smith and Montgomery. Alex Testoff’s three-pointer pulled the Admirals to within eight, before Cook’s lay up with 17 seconds left in the third put Pallotti back up by ten.

Severn’s determined defensive effort early in the fourth, augmented by Montgomery’s three pointer and Cortez Duncan’s lay-up, brought the Admirals to within, 39-34 with 5 minutes, 50 seconds remaining in regulation. But Jose Cavallo’s three-pointer from the left corner gave Pallotti some breathing room.

“When they made their run at the end, we didn’t want them to get any closer,” said Washington, who scored 10 points in the first half and successfully battled the taller Severn frontcourt. “I just kept telling myself that we were not going to lose this game and I came out from the beginning just hustling and trying to get as many rebounds as I could.”

“We didn’t panic when they made their comeback,” said Cook. “We just needed everyone to slow down and play at our pace, instead of theirs. Once we did that, it was all good.”

MOUNT ST. JOSEPH HOCKEY BREAKS THROUGH AGAINST CALVERT HALL

by Robert Klemko

The third time was the charm for Mount St. Joseph’s High ice hockey team Monday evening. The Gaels defeated Calvert Hall, 5-3, at the Ice Gardens in Laurel to gain sole possession of the first in the MIAA A Conference.

Senior forward Andrew McCrumb scored three goals for Mount St. Joseph (8-2-4 overall, 4-0-3 league), and Jake Natoli and Andrew Fitzhugh each tallied one. Junior Heath McLean scored two goals to lead Calvert Hall (9-5-3, 4-1-2) and Andrew Klick had a goal.

The first two meetings resulted in a tie, 2-2 on Dec. 13, and 3-3 a couple of weeks ago. The teams were deadlocked late in the second period Monday until Fitzhugh decided to take matters into his own hands.

With first place in the MIAA A and bragging rights in a burgeoning rivalry at stake, the diminutive junior winger decided to go deep into his bag of tricks after corralling the puck beyond Calvert Hall’s blue line. With a man between him and the goalie, Fitzhugh brought the puck as far as he could to his right and in one fluid motion, dragged his back toe and whipped the puck to his left, stunning the Calvert Hall defender. Fitzhugh then flipped the puck up and over the shoulder of goalie Stefen Blount, starting a three-goal uprising.

“That was dirty,” said McCrumb. “That really sparked us and got the fire under us. It was just a huge goal.”

“He’s done that two or three times this year, and he has really come around,” Mount St. Joseph coach Erv Terwilliger said.  “He’s got that move and he’s confident in it.”

The McCrumb-led senior line including forwards Stephen Courtney and Jake Natoli followed with goals in the third period, making it 4-1.

“They’ve been doing it all year, they’ve just been popping it in there,” Terwilliger said. “They’re very strong physical players and sometimes they try and do too much, but they can turn the game in a minute or two.”

The Gaels can win the regular season crown with a victory over Loyola Blakefield in their final league game Monday at the Ice Gardens. Calvert Hall would gain the title outright with a win over Loyola Feb. 8 and a Gael loss. The Cardinals would tie with a win combined with a Mount St. Joseph tie.

Calvert Hall had an opportunity to secure first outright Monday, but was out shot, 34-21, with just eight of their attempts coming in the first two periods. Blount, the Cardinals’ senior goalie, had 29 saves.

“The loss was disappointing, but we felt like our lack of effort was even more disappointing,” said Calvert Hall coach Mike Shramek. “In the last few times we played them our effort was much more consistent and I didn’t see it today.”

“We just didn’t have our game,” said Klick, a junior. “We came in a little flat during warm-ups and it kind of carried over into the first period.”

The Cardinals tried to mount a comeback as Klick’s goal brought the Cardinals within 4-3 in the third.  After Mount St. Joseph senior goalie Paul McDonald denied a rally of Cardinal shots, McCrumb punched in an empty-netter from mid-ice with two seconds remaining on the clock to seal the deal.

“It’s been a nice rivalry, but we’ve had the upper hand for quite a while, so they’ve really improved this year,” Terwilliger said.

LAKERS OVERCOME CAVALIERS, 54-21

Boys’ Latin coach Drew Haugh took advantage of some lineup changes and received some momentum-swinging efforts from his Lakers’ wrestlers to emerge with a 54-21 dual meet victory over Archbishop Spalding.

The Lakers led, 6-0, after a first-period pin by Chris Floccare (160), after which the Cavaliers got a technical fall and a pin, respectively, from Kavonte Smith (171) and Joe Brennan (189) to go up 11-6.

Next up, however, was the Lakers’ 215-pound Ryan Fish, fresh off of an ACL reconstruction as a result of an injury suffered during football season.

Fish took only 14 seconds to headlock and then pin his Cavaliers’ rival, giving the Lakers a lead of 12-11.

In the next bout, first-year wrestler Aaron Verardi bumped up from his 207 pound weigh-in to wrestle the Cavaliers’ 254-pound Beau Haworth, a tall, rangy opponent, at 285 pounds.

“Haworth stands about 6-foot-9 while Verardi’s height is about 5-10,” Haugh said. “It truly looked like David vs. Goliath out there. Both wrestlers jockeyed for position and had opportunities to put each other away.”

But it was Verardi who came out of their last bear-hug scramble to fall on his much larger opponent and to put him away at 4:30 of the third period to stretch the Lakers’ lead to 18-11.

From that point on, the Lakers won seven of the next eight bouts for a lead of 54-17 with one match left, including pins by Michael Floccare (125), Niko Manzari (130), Jon Frederick (135) and Michael Vardoulakis (145), with Frederick’s fall coming in only 51 seconds.

The run also included overtime decisions by Alex Malinowski (103) and Skip Newberger (140), and a forfeit to Pierce Haugh (119).

Malinowski overcame a five point deficit with less than 20 seconds to go by executing his patented split-cradle to send the match into overtime. There, he secured a slick takedown with 17 seconds left in the first extra session to win, 8-6.

Similarly, Newberger scored an overtime, 7-5, victory on a takedown.

The Cavaliers’ Jordan Cohill (152) blanked his opponent, 8-0, to close out the match.

KEITH RAWLINGS NAMED JOHN CARROLL’S NEW FOOTBALL COACH

The John Carroll School’s search for a new varsity football coach has ended.

Larry Dukes, John Carroll’s Athletic Director, has announced that Keith Rawlings, long-time Harford County resident and owner of The Arena Club, was offered and has accepted the position.

“We are very happy with our selection. We feel that Keith not only brings a strong football background, but someone who understands the community, the mission of the school, and possesses the values that we want instilled in our young men,” Dukes said.

“Keith has been successful throughout his life, most notably as owner of The Arena Club and past president of the Harford County Board of Realtors,” Dukes said. “And he’s done it through hard work, attention to detail, and through setting high standards for himself and others.”

Rawlings, who played football for Division III Salisbury State College, is a fixture on the sidelines in Harford County. Rawlings also owns The Arena Club health and fitness center.

Rawlings has coached at various levels of football, including the recreation level and as a member of the staff at Edgewood High School.

“I believe my experience both on and off the field will serve me well in motivating young people to achieve their best, not only as athletes, but as productive citizens of their schools and communities,” Rawlings said.

“Those same experiences provide me the perspective for quickly making the right decisions when situations arise concerning player safety, student development, the reputation of the school, and relationships between the athletic department and the parents, boosters, alumni, and community,” Rawlings said.

“I am excited about this opportunity. I love working with young people,” Rawlings said. “I am grateful for the trust and confidence that The John Carroll School is showing in me.”

The coaching search yielded several well-qualified candidates, and it appears that Coach Rawlings’ unique combination of on-field abilities and off-field contacts made a difference.

“Having been involved with coaching and young people most of my adult life, I share Keith’s enthusiasm for athletics and developing the whole student,” said Paul Barker, John Carroll’s principal.

“It was important to John Carroll that we hired someone who could not only make our football team successful on the field,” Barker  said, “but who has a clear sense of and support of the mission of the school.”

Rawlings will start in his new position immediately, assembling a coaching staff, meeting current student-athletes, and preparing for the fall 2008 season.
