FRIENDS UPEND KEY SCHOOL

by Robert Klemko

Friends School notched a 53-46 win over The Key School Thursday night in a MIAA non-conference battle in Annapolis. The Quakers outscored the Obezags, 23-14, in the fourth quarter after trading leads for most of the game.

Junior center R.J. Zukowski scored eight points in the paint in the fourth quarter with three field goals on second chance opportunities. Senior guard Eric Mundschenk finished off his team-high 12-point performance with two late three-pointers that put the game out of reach for the Quakers.

“We knew we had to bring the energy and play hard and it started to come together at the end and those buckets were a big part of that,” Zukowski said. “We had our minds on Gilman tomorrow so we started off slow but eventually picked up speed.”

Both teams were admittedly looking forward to future conference match-ups including Friends Friday home game against rival Gilman. Quakers coach Brian Anglim called the win over Key valuable practice.

“Energy-wise, I think it took them a little bit to get us there but I think the guys really came along and picked up in the second half,” Anglim said. “We had some good opportunities for three’s early but didn’t hit them but we got rolling later.”

Senior forward Theo Anthony and junior guard Charlie Flanagan each scored a team high nine points for Key (6-9 overall), but its 4-1 conference record remains tops in the MIAA C. The Obezags converted 15 of 23 free throw attempts to the disappointment of coach Darryl Smith.

“You just can’t win if you don’t hit the free throws,” Smith said. “Every free throw counts in a six-seven point game like this one.”

Friends (6-6 overall) has surpassed last year’s 5-15 finish. Though Anglim admits it’s been a rebuilding year, he says the team is making important strides.

“We’re a building program and we have some young guys in position to do us some good in the long run,” Anglim said. “We have some big games coming up that will define this season.”

Thursday’s low-scoring first half was marked by missed opportunities on both sides of the ball as the Quakers entered halftime with a 18-16 advantage.

“We missed some open threes and didn’t finish but I think we did a solid enough job on defense and by not having turnovers to keep it close,” said Friends junior guard Ryan Desmit, who shot a perfect six for six from the foul line in the final quarter.

Smith said that Friends man-to-man defense was a surprise to his players after facing 2-3 zones for much of the season, and a big reason the Obezags committed ten turnovers on the night.

“We wanted to attack the lanes because they had nine team fouls through three quarters but they just did such a great job of clogging the lanes that our guys were settling for some perimeter shots that just weren’t there,” Smith said.

Anthony called the game a valuable learning experience as Key looks forward to weekend games against conference foes Park and Beth Tfiloh. Key is tied with Beth Tfiloh for the C Conference lead.

“We got to work on some stuff and use some defensive sets that we hadn’t worked on before,” Anthony said. “We obviously would have been happier with the win but I think there is some good that came out of it.”

His credentials rival those of Hereford’s three-time state champion, Josh Asper.

Williams has lost 14 times during his career, but only four times in 34 bouts this season.

Williams
lone defeats of this year have been at two of the nation’s most
difficult wrestling invitational tournaments — the Beast of The East
and Iron Man events.

Williams was fifth at this year’s Beast of The East after having finished third as a freshman, and, fourth as a sophomore.

A student with a 3.8 grade point average, Williams was fifth at last year’s Iron Man.

As a freshman, Williams earned the state title at 103 pounds, and as a sophomore, Williams decked his state title bout opponent.

Asper, last weekend, won the prestigious Mount Mat Madness Invitational Tournament.

Asper is 18-0, having won 68 consecutive bouts, and is attempting to become only Maryland’s third-ever four-time state titlist.

Loyola’s defending MIAA champion Colin Schuster will also be among the top wrestlers in the event.

SCHITTINO’S THREE ELEVATES LOYOLA OVER SJCP

After a 9-0 start, the Loyola basketball team has struggled through a difficult stretch, but the Dons tasted the fruits of a big victory, last night at Blakefield, as Sal Schittino drained a three-point jumper, with 7.7 seconds left, to give his team a much needed, 59-56, MIAA A Conference win over St. John’s Catholic Prep.

Loyola romped to a 19-6 first quarter lead, but the Vikings outscored the Dons 41-22 over the middle two quarters to take a six point lead into the final quarter.  The Vikes were 6-of-6 from the three point line in the third quarter and enjoyed a lead as high as 11 points in the period.  The Dons, however, regained the momentum in the final stanza and pulled out the win with an 18-9 close.  Schittino finished with 13 points and shared team-high honors with James Davenport, while Matt Rum scored 11 for the Dons.

St. John’s star Troy King scored a game-high 23 points and drained five three-pointers.  He also launched a long three-pointer at the buzzer, in an attempt to tie, but it missed the mark.

The Dons (12-4 overall) are now 6-4 in the A Conference where they sit in fifth place.  St. John’s is now 7-10 overall and 2-8 in the conference.
