JOHN KELLY WINS TENNIS TITLE IN DC

JOHN KELLY WINS TENNIS TITLE IN DC

John Kelly of Gilman, an All-MIAA performer this past spring, is having a strong summer on the tennis circuit and most recently captured the B18 division of the District of Columbia Junior Open in Washington.

Kelly, the younger brother of 2006 MIAA #1 singles champion Ted Kelly, one of the top players in recent MIAA history, went 5-0 in the tournament and dropped only one set on his way to the title.

Since the conclusion of the MIAA season, Kelly has entered four USTA Junior events and has captured two titles and finished second once.  Currently, he is ranked 31st the Mid-Atlantic Region, in the B18 Division, with 973 points earned.

Kelly’s Gilman teammate Zach Gorn has the same number of points, but sits one spot higher in the USTA rankings.  Gorn won the 2007 MIAA title for #2 singles.  Both players were named first-team All-Metro this spring as well.

Kelly, with the graduation of his brother and Gorn, will inherit the #1 singles position, as a junior, at Gilman last spring.  He lead the Greyhounds in their quest for a third consecutive MIAA A Conference title.

SPALDING RELEASES CHAMBERS

SPALDING RELEASES CHAMBERS

Three years removed from the glory days of Rudy ***, the Archbishop Spalding basketball program announced that it will be seeking its fourth head coach in the last 17 months, yesterday, after it released Dale Chambers from the position after just one season.

Chambers replaced Mike Glick, who resigned late in the 2005-2006 season after a brief leave of absence.  Glick moved on to Gwynn Park and Pete Stickland, a former college head coach at Coastal Carolina was selected to lead the Cavaliers.  Strickland, however, stayed in the position for just a few weeks and never coached a single practice.  When fellow DeMatha graduate Sidney Lowe was hired as the new head coach at North Carolina State, he quickly lured Strickland back to the college ranks.

At that point, Spalding turned to Chambers, who was a finalist prior to the hiring of Stickland.

Chambers had been a long-time assistant at Annapolis High School under legendary coach John Brady.  He also played at Anne Arundel Community College under Mark Amatucci, who recently stepped down after 19 years as the head coach at Calvert Hall.

In Chamber’s single season at helm, Spalding went 10-22.  His biggest win came in the Baltimore Catholic League Tournament when the Cavaliers upset second-seeded St. Frances, 57-56, in a first round game.

Spalding has begun a search for Chambers replacement.

GILL & JARBOE PICK UP WEEKLY MLL HONORS

GILL & JARBOE PICK UP WEEKLY MLL HONORS

Former Calvert Hall and Navy netminder returns to lax stardom after seven years away from the game

A pair of former MIAA stars were honored by Major League Lacrosse this week as St. Paul’s Conor Gill was named Offensive Player of the Week and Calvert Hall’s Mickey Jarboe claimed Goalkeeper of the Week honors.

Gill, who plays for the Washington Bayhawks, is a fifth-year pro who was a three-time All-American at Virginia and the Most Outstanding Player of the 2002 NCAA Final Four.  He was selected after helping the Bayhawks snap a three game losing streak with the winning goal in a 16-15 victory over San Francisco.  He finished the contest with three goals, including a pair of two-pointers, and three assists.  This is the second time in his career he has won the MLL Player of the Week Award.

Jarboe, one of the biggest surprises in the MLL this summer, made a career high 25 saves to lead the first-place Los Angeles Riptide to a 17-5 win over the Denver Outlaws.  In addition, he allowed just one goal in the second half, as the Riptide equaled a league mark for the least amount of points allowed in a single game.

Jarboe, who made the L.A. roster during open try-outs after spending the last seven years away from the game, leads the league in goals against average (12.4) and has a .580 save percentage.  This is the second time this year he has won the award and it followed an appearance in the MLL All-Star Game.

Jarboe graduated from the Naval Academy in 2000 and went on to fulfill his military obligation and he remains a U.S. Navy helicopter pilot.  In the spring, he transferred to San Diego and was urged to attend the Riptide tryouts by former Navy teammate Sean Donnelly, who also plays for the Riptide.

It was a case of the right place at the right time.

Mickey Jarboe
L.A., which is coached by John Tucker, an Archbishop Curley graduate and
a longtime MIAA coach with Gilman, Loyola and Severn, expected to start
an all-star and graduate of the MIAA in goal this year, but they did
not expect it to be Jarboe.   Tillman Johnson, a former Virginia and
St. Mary’s superstar, was the team’s incumbent in the cage, but he
elected to sit out the 2007 season to fulfill obligations related to
his job with a pharmaceutical company.  This left the door wide open
and Jarboe seized control of the position.

FIVE FROM THE MIAA NAMED TO THE U.S. U-19 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM

FIVE FROM THE MIAA NAMED TO THE U.S. U-19 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM

Following four days of try-outs at UMBC, five MIAA lacrosse players were named to the 2008 U.S. Men’s U-19 Lacrosse Team, which will compete at the International Lacrosse Federation (ILF) U-19 World Championships next July in British Columbia.

Heading the list is Loyola All-American Tim Donovan, who helped the Dons defeat Boys’ Latin on the same UMBC turf, in May, for the MIAA A Conference title.  Donovan, who will play at Johns Hopkins in 2008, will be joined by Loyola teammate Steele Stanwick, who was named the 2007 Baltimore Player of the Year as a junior.

Two other recent MIAA graduates named to the team were Gilman’s Peter Fallon and Severn’s Nick Elsmo.  Fallon, a defender, was a key leader for a young Gilman team which peaked late in the season and made a run to the MIAA semifinals.  He will play at Brown next season.  Elsmo, a midfielder on his way to Virginia, was 1st-Team All-Metro for a second straight year and was also named an All-American.

Rounding out the MIAA selections is McDonogh goalie Tyler Fiorito.  Fiorito, who joins Stanwick as one of only five rising seniors named to the team, was a first-team All-Metro selection in the spring.

The 23-man squad was selected from a group of 120 finalists invited to the try-outs at UMBC.  MIAA players in that group which failed to make the final team included Andrew Feinberg of McDonogh, Joe Bonanni of St. Mary’s, Mark Staines of Severn and Alex Lyons and Jake Hagelin of Boys’ Latin.

BUDZYNSKI IS ON HIS WAY TO CABRINI

BUDZYNSKI IS ON HIS WAY TO CABRINI

Stan Budzynski, a senior forward with the John Carroll basketball team last winter, has committed to play his college basketball at Division III Cabrini College (PA), where he will begin studying in the fall.

Budzynski, who stands 6′-6″, filled the power forward role for the Patriots last season and averaged 4.3 points and 4.3 rebounds.  His rebounding average was second on the team and he shot 50.5% from the field and 73.8% from the free throw line.

â??This is a great opportunity for Stanley,â? said John Carroll head coach Tony Martin.  â??It is a testament to his hard work, dedication and determination.  We are very excited for him and his family.â?

A unique footnote to Budzynski’s high school career is the fact that played on John Carroll’s 2004-2005 team, which went winless, and then played on last year’s squad, which set a record for most wins (28) in school history.  In between, he missed his entire junior year with a serious knee injury suffered during the first pre-season scrimmage.  The injury required surgery and jeopardized Budzynski’s career.  After extensive rehabilitation and a commitment to a strength training program, Budzynski was able to return to the team last fall, in time for pre-season conditioning.

Stan Budzynski
â??Stanley is one of the toughest competitors I have coached in my twenty
years of experience,â? explained Martin. â??His will and quiet leadership
were invaluable to our young group, and we were very lucky to have him
these last two years.

Budzynski joins fellow John Carroll graduate Ryan Horka in continuing
his academic and basketball career at the next level.  Earlier this
spring, Horka committed to perennial Division III power Catholic
University, out of Washington, DC.

Cabrini College sports one of the most successful menâ??s basketball programs in NCAA Division III history.  Entering play this past season, the Cavaliers had compiled an overall record of 492-230 for a .681 winning percentage, the third best winning percentage in all of NCAA Division III menâ??s basketball.

Cabrini coach Greg Herenda said, “We are very excited about Stan coming to join our program here at Cabrini.  He is a terrific young man that can do many things on the basketball court. He is a skilled player with size and he obviously has been very well coached. He will be a great addition to our frontcourt and I am very excited to have him join our Cavalier family.”

ROCKWELL IN THE HUNT AT MARYLAND OPEN

ROCKWELL IN THE HUNT AT MARYLAND OPEN

Gilman grad and former MIAA champion fires low nine and finishes one under to tie for eighth

Chris Rockwell, who won the 2006 MIAA Individual Stroke Play Golf Championship while a senior at Gilman, is tied for eighth after one round at the 86th Maryland Open Championship, being held this week at Chartwell Golf & Country Club.

Rockwell, who plays out of Green Spring Valley HC, fired a one under par opening round score of 70 and is just three shots behind leader Chip Sullivan, a PGA pro from Ashley Plantation in Virginia.

Off to a blistering pace, Rockwell posted the day’s low nine when he shot a 31 on the back nine, where he opened.  A couple of three puts, however, prevented him from being closer to the lead as he closed with a 39.

Rockwell just completed his freshman year at Vanderbilt University, where he posted a 74.17 scoring average over 12 rounds.  His low round of 69 was tied for sixth best on the team and he holed 27 birdies during the season.

Several golfers who took part in the 2007 MIAA Championships also participated in the event with McDonogh’s Michael Fader and Gilman’s Brad Miller leading that group with four over par scores of 75.  Also of note, Archbishop Curley’s Evan Kilchenstein posted a (+7) 78 and John Mlynarski of Saints Peter & Paul, who tied for seventh recently in the Maryland Junior Amateur Championship, was in at 79 (+8).

Several other MIAA alumni golfers were also in the field.  The tournament continues today and tomorrow.

GREENE SHOWS LONG RANGE SHOOTING SKILLS AS US U19 TEAM DOMINATES GLOBAL GAMES

GREENE SHOWS LONG RANGE SHOOTING SKILLS AS US U19 TEAM DOMINATES GLOBAL GAMES

TC star now off to Serbia for FIBA U19 World Championships

DALLAS – Donte Greene of Towson Catholic continued his preparations this week for the U19 Basketball World Championships with Team USA, as the Americans swept three contests to win the 2007 Global Games title before departing for Novi Sad, Serbia for the the World Championships, which get underway on Thursday.

In the Global Games, Greene averaged 8.3 points, 3.3 rebounds and 12 minutes per contest, coming off the bench.  His best game was on Friday when he scored 11 points by going 5-for-6 from the field in a 117-79 rout of Puerto Rico.  During the tournament Greene was also 3-of-7 from beyond the three point arc, a skill he flashed during his MIAA career, but was unable to fully exploit because the Owls needed his 6′-10″ presence under the basket.  In Dallas, he also went 6-of-7 (85.7%) from the free throw line.

Greene is just one of three members of the American team with no college experience, but he did have an opportunity to play with the U18 national team last summer.  It has been a whirlwind year for Greene, who along with fellow senior Malcolm Delaney, led Towson Catholic to MIAA and Baltimore Catholic League championships.  Following his high school season, Greene appeared in the McDonald’s and Nike All-American games and has refined his skills competing in pickup games with present and past NBA stars, including former TC and Syracuse All-American Carmelo Anthony.

The U.S. opens play at the World Championships on Thursday when they meet Mali at noon (EDT).  They will continue in pool play on Friday against China (2:30 pm) and on Saturday (noon) against host Serbia.  The top three teams from Group B, of which the U.S. is a part, will then advance to a seeded pool with the top three teams from Group A.  The tournament will then continue to advance towards the medal round games, which will be played on July 22.
