BASEBALL: BRUINS RALLY TO DEFEAT SAINTS 9-5

by Andy Sussman

Park pitcher Tony DeMarco gave up four runs in the first inning, but he more than made up for his initial struggles later in the game.  DeMarco, a senior, gave up just one run after the first inning and hit a go-ahead, three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning to lead the Bruins over defending MIAA B Conference champion St. Mary’s, 9-5, in a B Conference elimination game.

“I had a lot of nerves, especially after I hit a batter,” DeMarco said of his near disastrous first inning.  “But after that, I calmed down and our defense filled in the gaps behind me.”

Saints’ ace John Stewart, who held Park to one run in their first playoff matchup last week, struggled with control and fatigue.  Stewart struck out five, but walked six batters.

With St. Mary’s up 5-3 in the bottom of the sixth, the Bruins batted around the entire lineup, scoring six runs.  Asked how Park was able to hit Stewart, particularly late in the game, Bruins first baseman Alec Ring responded:  “We just saw [Stewart] last week and today, he didn’t throw as many breaking pitches, just a bunch of fastballs.”

The Saints built a 4-0 lead before a single out was recorded, with their first five hitters reaching base.  However, DeMarco had five strikeouts and walked only two the remainder of the game, and Park’s defense behind him regrouped after committing several lapses early on.

Even still, Park faced a deficit until DeMarco’s home run gave the Bruins a 7-5 lead, which they would maintain.

“I was so excited after that home run, I sprinted the entire way around the bases,” said a smiling DeMarco, who had three hits in as many at-bats.  Park also used depth in its lineup to its advantage, as eight of nine starting players scored during the game.

With the loss to the Bruins, St. Mary’s season came to an end and the Saints will move on next year with a new head coach, as this contest marked the final game for Dave Lanham, who also serves as the school’s athletic director.  Earlier this year, Lanham announced that he was leaving St. Mary’s at the conclusion of the school year to become the new AD at Meade High School.

The Bruins now advance to face St. Vincent Pallotti to determine who will face Boys’ Latin team, which is undefeated in the playoffs, in the finals at Ripken Stadium, on Thursday.

MSJ’S MICHALEK LEADS MIAA INDIVIDUAL GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS

Mount St. Joseph’s Dan Michalek shot an opening round 73 at Pine Ridge Golf Course, yesterday, to take the early lead in the 2008 MIAA Individual Golf Championships, yesterday.  Michalek holds to a one shot advantage over Gilman’s Matt Mighty, who shot a 74 at Mount Pleasant Golf Course.

With the field equally split between Pine Ridge and Mount Pleasant, John Mlynarski of Saints Peter & Paul and Ben Shields of Loyola directly followed Michalek at Pine Ridge, each shooting rounds of 75, while Jason Clatworthy of St. Vincent Pallotti and Dave Nastalski each posted rounds of 76.

At Mount Pleasant, Ryan Lee-Young of McDonogh scored a 76, while Gilman’s Brad Miller, who competed in last year’s U.S. Junior Amateur, was one of six golfers who finished at 77.

The top 20 golfers, plus ties, at each course yesterday qualified for today’s second round.  The golfers are scheduled to switch courses, as they attempt to qualify for tomorrow’s final round at Old South Country Club.

Rain, however, threatens today’s action.  The MIAA has said it will make every effort to play today and will go forward in the rain, if the courses are open and no hazardous conditions exist. Players should come prepared to deal with the elements.

However, if today’s action is cancelled, tomorrow’s final round will proceed as scheduled.  Yesterday’s qualifiers will be pared to just the top 10 finishers, plus ties, from each course and the tournament will be decided on the basis of just two rounds.

Click the links below for complete results from both courses, yesterday, as well as today’s scheduled tee times.

CAVALIERS BLANK FRIARS, 7-0, BEHIND PATTEN

by Joe DiBlasi

After dropping its first game in the MIAA A Conference double-elimination playoff tournament, Archbishop Curley managed to fight its way into week two with solid pitching and clutch hitting, as it reeled off three consecutive wins.  Yesterday, however, the Friars could not find either ingredient at Archbishop Spalding, as the host Cavaliers monopolized both.

Powered by a pair of three-run home runs, off the bats of Kevin Moran and Jeff Kemp, Spalding (28-6) backed a three-hit, shutout effort from pitcher Jason Patten to defeat the
Friars, 7-0, and move onto the tournament finals, opposite three-time defending champion Calvert Hall.  The Cavaliers and Cardinals are scheduled to meet Wednesday night at 7:00 pm at Ripken Stadium in Aberdeen.  Calvert Hall (25-7) needs just one win to retain its crown, while Spalding must win Wednesday to force a decisive “if” game on Thursday, which is also slated for Ripken Stadium.

The top two seeds in the tournament, Calvert Hall and Spalding split their two regular season meetings.  Last Friday, the Cardinals gained a major advantage when they defeated the Cavs, 7-2, in the winners’ bracket final at Calvert Hall.

Only four Friars reached base against Patten, who worked five innings. The big right-hander was in command all the way, as he walked just one.  Kemp came on in
the sixth to preserve the win for coach Steve Miller.

“They are a very good hitting team, and I had to hit my spots today,” said Patten, who notched his seventh win of the year.  “I had a good slider, and I was hitting my spots.”

“Jason only threw
57 pitches, and he’ll be ready on Thursday,” said Miller, obviously looking forward to a victory on
Wednesday.

Spalding grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second when
centerfielder Paul DeVito doubled home catcher Eddie Palmer, who singled to
start the inning.

Moran’s three-run shot, over the left-field fence with
two on in the third, made it 4-0, and Kemp’s three-run blast, in the
sixth, put icing on the cake.

“I was sitting on a change-up, and I got it,” said the slugging shortstop.

The Friars mounted a threat in the
fourth, when they had two on and two out with Norm Cushing at the plate.  Cushing hit a fly ball to
left that had extra-bases written all over it, but Spalding left-fielder Matt
Hillsinger made a great diving catch to end the inning and deflate the Friars.

“I caught a fast-ball,” said Moran, of his home run.  The senior is putting a strong close to an outstanding athletic career at the Anne Arundel County school.  The speedy
right-fielder was also the qaurterback for the Cavalier football team the last two seasons, leading them to a championship in 2006 and back to the conference championship game last fall.

Both managers will have some interesting decisions to make, with regard to starting pitchers on Wednesday.  Calvert Hall skipper Lou Eckerl has a rested Kevin Lingerman, who defeated Spalding last Friday, but he also has senior Mike Dillon, who was the winning pitcher in title clinching efforts, the last two years, for the Cardinals.  Miller will choose between DeVito and Kemp.

Regardless of which pitchers make the starts, it will likely be all hands on deck for both teams, with a title on the line.

Curley, the third seed in the tournament, ended its season at 23-8.

BL ADVANCES TO B CONFERENCE BASEBALL FINAL

by Joe DiBlasi

Coach Mike Bordick will
take his Boys’ Latin baseball team to Ripken Stadium on Wednesday afternoon where
the Lakers will
play for the MIAA B Conference Championship, as they advanced to the finals for the second consecutive year, on the strength of a 7-6 win over
St. Vincent Pallotti, in the Winners’ Bracket Final on Saturday.

Last year when BL reached the final, it was a winner take all championship game, between the winners of two double-elimination flights, and St. Mary’s defeated the top-seeded Lakers.  This year, the tournament was narrowed down to one double-elimination field and the Lakers will go to Ripken as the only remaining unbeaten team in the tournament.  This means they have two chances to win one game and capture the title.  Their opponent will need two wins to take the championship.

Three teams are still vying to be that opponent.

On Saturday morning, Park routed Friends, 8-0, in a contest played at Calvert Hall, and St. Mary’s edged Chapelgate Christian, 1-0.  This matches these two teams against each other, in an elimination contest this afternoon at Park.  The winner of that game will go to Panther Park in Laurel, tomorrow, to challenge Pallotti for the second spot in the finals.

In its win over Chapelgate, St. Mary’s received an outstanding effort from senior right-hander Tony Cerverizzo, who pitched a two-hitter and struck
out 12 in the shut out effort.  It was a performance the Saints absolutely had to have because the Yellowjackets countered with an equally impressive pitching effort from Matt Siggins, who also yielded just two
hits while fanning 15.

The game’s only run came in the bottom of
the seventh on an RBI single by Jordan King.

Wednesday’s final in Aberdeen is scheduled to begin at 4:00 pm and it will be followed, at 7:00 pm, by the A Conference final.  The “if necessary” game, for both conferences will be held on Thursday at Ripken Stadium, if needed.

The A Conference final features three time defending champion Calvert Hall, as the only remaining undefeated team in that tournament.  The Cardinals will meet the winner of today’s final elimination game between Archbishop Spalding and Archbishop Curley, being played at Spalding’s Cavalier Field (4:00 pm).

GREYHOUNDS CAPTURE ‘A’ GOLF CROWN, 14-7 OVER CARDS

by Joe DiBlasi

Senior Brad Miller and junior Hunter Rief
won the #1 and #3 matches, respectively, and freshmen Sam Stewart and Linn
Worthington, playing five and six, stepped up big as the Gilman Greyhounds
won their second MIAA A Conference Championship in four years, at Caves Valley on
Saturday, defeating Calvert Hall 14-7.

Despite windy conditions on an
already difficult track, the Greyhounds were able to prevail over the Cardinals
in the four hour match.

“Calvert Hall played well, but we seemed to hit
the ball where we wanted to when we had to,” said Stewart.

The Cardinals got
wins from #2 Mike Tavik and #4 Adam Stasuk, but it wasn’t enough.  Rief and
Arthur Worthington won their team point, as did Stewart and Linn
Worthington.

“Coach stresses teamwork and that’s why we seem to be able
to win,” said Gilman’s #2 Jason Frankel.  “It’s very gratifying to be able to
win a championshiop for him.”

Frankel was referring to coach
Don Rogers, who led the Greyhounds to another championship.

It was Rogers’
fourth straight appearence in the finals, as he leveled his title match record to

FRIARS BEAT CRUSADERS, 4-2, TO ADVANCE ‘A’ BASEBALL

by Joe DiBlasi

Senior Sean Thompson hurled a
complete game five-hitter on Saturday to lead Archbishop Curley to a 4-2 victory over St.
Paul’s, eliminating the Crusaders from the MIAA A Conference baseball post-season sending coach Jack Thomas’ squad to Archbishop Spalding, on Monday, where they challenge the second-seeded Cavaliers for spot in next Wednesday’s finals, opposite top-seeded Calvert Hall, at Ripken
Stadium.

Thompson helped put Curley (23-7) ahead 2-0 in the bottom
of the first with an RBI single and the Friars added single runs in the third
and fifth innings to take a 4-0 lead.  Keith Fritz dorve in three for the
Friars, on a double and two sacrifice flys.

Thompson had to  pitch out of
trouble in the sixth, when coach Paul Bernstorf’s competitive club scored twice
on a single by Brian Prater, who had three hits on the day, but a great play
by first-baseman Norm Cushing ended the threat and saved the day for
Curley.  With two down and one on, the Crusaders’ Steve Breckler ripped a ground
ball down the line that looked like a sure double, but Cushing dove toward the
line, smothered the ball and ended the threat.

“I was able to mix my
pitches well today, and I had good velocity on my fast ball,” said the
right-hander. “There are no easy games in the playoffs and St. Paul’s is a
very good team.”

Thompson probably can’t wait to  return
to Anne Arundel County on Monday. He blasted three homers against and led his team to a victory when the Friars visited Cavalier Park during the regular
season.  Spalding won the earlier contest between the two teams, at Curley.

It’s been a long week for third-seeded Curley, as they opened the tournament with a loss to Mount St. Joseph, before responding with seventh inning wins against Loyola and St. Joe, as well as yesterday’s tense battle with St. Paul’s (17-12).  Spalding has played just twice in the tournament after earning a first round bye.  The Cavs (27-6) opened with a decisive win over St. Paul’s and then fell, 7-2, to Calvert Hall on Friday.

Wednesday’s final is scheduled to begin at 7:00 pm and the Curley/Spalding winner will need to defeat Calvert Hall (25-7) twice in order to deny the Cardinals their fourth straight A Conference crown.  The “if necessary” game will be played on Thursday, also at Ripken Stadium.

BOYS LACROSSE: CARDINAL GIBBONS EARNS 3RD STRAIGHT TITLE GAME, 11-8

by Lem Satterfield

Dan Phelan scored three times with one assist, Ryan Roth had three goals, Dave Stark scored once with two assists, and Jason Preston had a goal and an assist as Cardinal Gibbons vanquished Baltimore Lutheran, 11-8, on Friday in MIAA C Conference semifinal action.

Dave Nesbit, Hunter Truette and Pat Hathaway scored once each, Mike Dougherty had an assist, and Christian Klimczyk made 13 saves during the fifth straight win for the Crusaders (12-6), who improved their record on the year against the Saints (10-5) to 2-1.

“They beat us, 15-10, on April 1, the first time we played them, when we lost our defender, Barry Tramer, to an injury,” said first-year coach Keith Reitenbach, whose Crusaders won their second meeting with the Saints, 11-9, on April 25.

Reitenbach credited Tramer, Donnie Gould, Will Foy and Travis Mitchell for their play on defense.

Gould also plays football, Foy is the lead in the Cardinal Gibbons school musical, and Mitchell is a first-year player, having switched form baseball.

“This time, we shut them out in the first quarter, and we led, 6-3, at halftime. But they got within, 7-6, in the third quarter before we were able to pull away,” said Reitenbach, whose Crusaders, in victory, qualified for their third straight C Conference title game.

Reitenbach’s assistants are Matt Enoch, a former player at Loyola High, Essex Community College and Drexel University, and Ralph Quillen, who played at Essex and the University of Maryland.

The Crusaders, tournament runners-up the past two seasons, will get their third shot at St. John’s Catholic Prep (17-4), which won its semifinal, 12-8, over Towson Catholic (14-5).

The Crusaders lost both regular season games to St. John’s, 12-11, in overtime on April 7, and, 15-8, on May 2.
